Oil catch can?

Recommended Posts

If for some reason you wished to remove the Catch Can, can you easily return to the stock setup? I've got 67 miles on my truck, ordering one very soon!

Yep just save the stock PCV line that's removed during the install. I saved mine so I could return it to stock if I wanted to.

Can't remember what I did with mine ... but I can't think of one good reason why I'd ever want to return to the stock "intake manifold oiling system" ...

Only reason I would is if I sold the truck and new owner didn't want to deal with the additional maintenance. In the winter it sure seems to fill up fast making it necessary to keep a close eye on it. This kind of maintenance is not for everyone.

I was mainly curious if RX re-designed the bracket or not. Did you order from them direct?

I seen something on their website regarding "now with new redesigned bracket" or something along those lines.

I ordered mine direct from RX in Florida, I can sense that sending it up here to Alberta, Canada will take some time. But it's a complete kit (clean side sep) and not just the catch can and hoses.

Fun fact, I have my brother interested in one as well now, he was a 2014 F150 with ecoboost and about 20K miles on it, not impressed with the declining mileage. I told him to take a look at his pcv lines and intake, nicely soaked with oil. Ecoboosts are bad in that that stuff is churning through the turbo before going to his intake, can't be too good.

He probably needs a induction service already.

How fast does it fill up? I live in MI as well. 500 miles? 1,000 miles?

On another note, are hoods designed to be opened and closed a lot lol? Seems like a silly question really, but in reality, how many times does the average car/truck have its hood opened throughout its life, you know what I mean?

I've only had mine since February and I was checking it a lot when I first installed it but I'm nervous going 500 miles and not checking in the cold weather. I feel I could use a larger capacity can. But I've also been using E85 and someone else in this thread mentioned that it caused more water collection which I have noticed with mine. See my logs.

Interesting question. If anything a good reminder to keep the hood latch and hinges lubricated to hopefully keep them in good working order longer.

Never seen a hood wear out from use .... but this is the 21st century. We used to never have engines burn oil right off the showroom floor either ... :wtf:

And door hinges used to be a bolt on replacement that lasted 30-40 years, give or take.

Best to lube them OFTEN with the best you can buy. Even then there's no guarantees these days.

I haven't checked my catch can in a while. Last I checked I had gone about 600 miles or so, and only had maybe an ounce in there. Now that the warm weather is here, there's alot less fluid in the form of moisture. A 615 mile trip at the end of March netted double that amount, alot of it water.

In the 70s, I pumped gas after school. It was required to ask; "can I check under the hood for you?" So, about every regular customer to that station got the hood opened every tank of gas. And yes, I have seen worn out hood hinges. It was because they never got lubed. Same with door hinges too.

So i guess my last concern is, will dealer give you a hard time about warranty if you have a catch can installed? I know they have to prove it caused the issue, but still...? I thought I remember reading a few people on here have gone to the dealer with no complaints so far.

I guess i could ask my service guy, maybe he would know?

I'm heading the dealership this Friday for my first free oil change and for them to look at a vibration I've been feeling. I'll let you know if they say anything about my catch can.

Back when mine was still under warranty, I had pipes, & a K&N cold air intake - they never mentioned any of it ... and I had quite a few warranty claims - mostly pulsating brakes and incessant interior squeaks and rattles. Then there were 3 or 4 recall items too, one of them for the heated washer fluid system, which after the 3rd visit on that they just disconnected it permanently.

I think the prevailing notion is that GM and the dealer have to prove something to deny a claim. They aren't in the business of proving things. They will simply deny coverage if the service manager or his people decide it's your modification that caused the issue. They will just say "warranty claim is denied because ...." and that will be the start of YOUR issue.
