Runt was probably around 4 years old in that pic. He's not with me any longer, and neither is the pickup.

The little monster in my avatar (Hercules) is my newest, and his new chariot will be arriving for him next Thursday (I hope). He's a lot bigger than he was in that photo; at this point he's already crested 85lbs or so, on his way to +100.

It's hard not to like a lab. If I just wanted a companion, not a bird dog, it'd be a Lab. They just don't do what I want for the quail hunting. But not bad.

It's strange to hear that, because duck hunters use them all the time with great success. While I don't understand the difference; is it because they won't spook the quail up into flight?

Jason

Duck hunting a completely different activity. Quail hunting requires covering a lot of land to find them. Labs just don't do that anywhere nearly as efficiently as a big running pointer.

My lab does fine with covering land.... the issue is no pointing instinct. My dog will hold close and will work back and forth well, but it's nothing like the advantage you get having a dog point. The advantage to labs IMO is they are tough as nails and live to fetch. My dog trusts his nose and is very good at hunting winged birds. For me the cost of a pointer isn't worth it for as much as I get to hunt vs a $100 lab, as the lab can be used for ducks, is very good with people and doesn't require as much training.

Yeah. My lab is a fetching machine. I like to hunt her on pheasant in heavy cover more than the pointer. I don't duck hunt, but I do love my lab. She was my first and will always be #1. But, the pointer is getting good with people and sure is a lot of fun around the house too. Much more playful than the ol lab. The training part is a different deal. I didnt' train mine, but just maintaining her requires learning how she was trained so you can solve problems. It's fun weather I'm training or hunting. Sometimes I do it together.
