Swap 2014 SLE Headlights for SLT w/ LEDs?

Recommended Posts

The '16 SLT and Denali have LED projectors with the "intellibeam" auto high/low feature, and the horseshoe LED DRL's.

I haven't seen the SLE so I can't be sure, but the '16 Sierra HD's come with the '14-'15 style headlights with LED DRL's, and new (real) HID projectors and bulbs.

SO I assume the SLE gets the new style headlights, but without the LED DRL, but WITH the HID bulbs and projectors like the '16 HD's.

Not sure if this helps but its from GMC's website

  • New headlamps with GMC signature LED lighting on all models
  • High-Intensity Discharge (HID) projector-beam headlamps with LED signature standard on base model, SLE and SLT
  • Thin-profile LED foglamps standard on SLT, All Terrain and Sierra Denali
  • High-performance LED headlamps with LED signature standard on Sierra Denali and available on SLT
  • New grille design with specific appearance for base model, Elevation, SLE, SLT, All Terrain and Sierra Denali
  • LED taillamps standard on SLT, All Terrain and Sierra Denali.

what i notice as a big difference is the section closest to the grill has the GMC logo on the upper model sierra and an actual light (appears to be amber bulb) on the SLE model's.

Not so fast bud. I've been talking with Jarod and Ofer and there's some things we can' figure out and that doesn't make since. Back in early December I got the part 1500 part numbers from my GM parts guy which were 23506752 and 53. Jarod came up with numbers in the GM parts catalog which are 84016911 and 10 and are supposed to be HID's. The 23506752 and 53 list price for $1,160 each and the 84016911 and 10 list for less at $895 each. Why would the HID lights sell for $250 less each and what's the difference in the two lights?

I gave Jarod 3 truck VIN's; One for a Denali, one for an SLT and one for an SLE all 1500's. All 3 had the "C" shade LED's and looked the same. Jarod pulled up the VIN's through GM and here's what he came up with. The Denali and the SLT had 23506752 and 53 and the SLE had 84016911 and 10. From the info Jarod has, the 23506752 and 53 are called Intellibeam headlights which have the $1,160 list price and the 84016911 and 10 are the HID's and have the cheaper $895 retail price. So why would the Denali and SLT have non HID lights which are more expensive and why does the SLE have "supposedly" HID's which are cheaper in price?? Doesn't make since to either of us. Does the SLE have HID's and the SLT/Denali have LED headlights with Intellibeam or are they halogens? Is there a mistake in the GM catalog (which there have been know to be) and the SLE's are halogen bulbs while the SLT/Denali are HID's? Member Jalverez1 said he got a set of these '16 lights in an earlier post so I pm'd him to check what bulbs are in his assemblies with part numbers but never heard back. Any thoughts? Ofer told me he wasn't going to get any of the '16 lights anytime soon so we need help on figuring this out. Doesn't seem like an easy fix at this point. Can anyone check with a dealer and compare headlights between the SLE and SLT/Denali? Thanks in advance.

Ones HID and the SLT is LED. My friend has an SLT which is where I got the part number. I took a picture of each light. The picture I photoshoped is the SLT light, the SLE light has an open parking light in the center instead of the GMC logo. Thats why I was saying in earlier posts if I knew for a fact the LED headlights would work I would sell my 14/15 SLT lights yesterday.

Also you can get the 23506752/53 for $821 a piece. http://www.xpressgmparts.com/oe-gm/23506752

The SLE has the same "C" shape and should have the LED DRl's. I can see the halogen turn on the SLE. So does the SLT have LED headlight bulbs? What exactly is the Intellibeam feature?

Yes SLT had LED buld. The SLT turn signal is also in the "C" shaped LED where the SLE is halogen in the center. I have a video I'll upload in a sec. Intellibeam is automatic bright lights that sensor oncoming traffic, light changes etc. So basically they switch from dim to bright automatically.

The thing now is there are different combinations that could be used and to see which would work. Someone with a '14/'15 SLE may want the HID headlights or may want the LED headlights or, a '14/'15 SLT owner who would want the HID (cheaper $) or the LED headlights. These would all take different harness' and it's to know or figure out which combination would work best with the '14/'15 BCM. Would the Intellibeam work with either the '14/'15 SLE or SLT factory harness? The more expensive LED headlights also use the LED switchbacks for the turns which may need a load resistor to prevent hyper flash where as the HID setup wouldn't because it has a halogen turn bulb.

Im guessing the intellibeam will not work as there is probably some programming involved. Im ok with the old fashioned manual high beams. Let me tell you though, the LED headlights are BRIGHT! So what do you think Ofer will do? I have an SLT and want the SLT lights to work but don't want to be out $1600 when they cant work. Can your GM buddy loan you a light so he can see if its possible then return it?

I doubt he will loan one as he has to order it. Maybe if he had one in stock. I have an SLT as well. I know the LED bulbs are bright but HID's aren't a pushover either lol. I'll get with them to see which would work best on the SLT BCM. I wouldn't mind the HID's and are a good bit cheaper. I'll check price on them.

The look though is the deal breaker for me. The 16 SLT lights look better. Tell him to buy them, make them work and throw in the harness once done and I'll buy them. He has my email if interested.

Here's a half baked idea...

Setup a Go Fund Me acct. Everyone who's interested in converting their headlights should contribute some funds. If it works out, return the funds. If it doesn't work out, you're not out a ton of money and the donations sort of take the sting out of the deal.

I don't know the in and outs of Go Fund Me or if this is even possible. The idea just came to me.

I don't know about you guys, but just dumping over $60k into a 2015 Denali, I'm PISSED GM made these changes after only 2 model years! Pisses me off every time I see a '16 on the road.

I really like the new headlights and tail lights, but I'm sure there will be some BCM programming that needs to occur after the install and wiring are ironed out. Nothing happens without it. I've had experience with programming BCMs, and I doubt any GM service tech can go in there and reflash or select the LED headlights to work on a 14/15 bc it won't be in any options available to them. It's more complicated that most think it is.

It will have to be done aftermarket by someone that is pretty savy. Maybe that guy that is adding additional features to the radios can do it, idk. But then the question arises, what if u take your truck into the dealer for some campaign/recall and they go and reflash your BCM and you lose your headlights? Anything is possible.

Don't get me wrong here, I hope someone can figure this stuff out. Where there's a will, theres a way.

Why would you need a BCM flash for headlights? Other than for the fact of intellibeam which we really dont need if you're already in a 14-15.

edit: gofundme may not be a bad idea. We only need one headlight from SLE/SLT each for them to test. If we did may gen5 could give the donate-rs some $$ off a harness once they got it to work or something.
