That's a lot of ifs to go right. I'll take a proper torque wrench over those lazy-man extensions any day, thank- you.

I always use a torque wrench on my lug nuts on every car and truck I own. However, it is hard to force tire store or dealership techs to do the same. It is time consuming and a lot more work for them. Some time ago one large tire chain received a lot of complaints about lug nuts coming loose on vehicles that they serviced. So they instructed their employees to check tightness of the lug nuts with a torque wrench as the final step. I watched one of those guys do this on somebody else's car. He first tightened the lug nuts with an air impact wrench (without any torque extension), then lowered the car and went around checking the torque on each lug nut. The wrench clicked before he could tighten any of them, meaning they were all overtorqued, and probably not very evenly either. To torque anything properly with a torque wrench, the fastener must be moving when the final torque is reached (beam type wrench) or the wrench clicks (click type wrench). It looks like this chain was only concerned with lug nut being sufficiently tight not to come loose and they clearly did not understand the logic behind torquing something.

I torque my lugs with an impact. Proper torque? Nope. Ever had an issue so far? Nope. I've swapped my entire drivetrain in my other truck and never checked a single fastener with a torque wrench. Now, if I was doing internal engine or tranny or differential work, I'd make sure those were torqued properly for sure. That's not something you mess with ever few months or so

I just finished an 800 mile drive to NC and absolutely no vibration. I never thought this day would come! I couldn't be happier. I don't know if the fix will work for everyone but it's worth a shot. I traded my P.O.S. 2016 Silverado LTZ (which was a replacement for a P.O.S. 2015 Silverado LTZ) on it for a Toyota Tundra yesterday.

If it makes anyone other than me feel better, I have had multiple people email me via dontbuyasilverado.com and inquire about the issue. These were all people shopping for trucks who have come across one of the multiple forums discussing this mess. I'm pretty sure that I have been able to convince all of them to not purchase a new silverado without test driving it. If it doesn't vibrate, I have them insist the dealer remove/reinstall the wheels before they take possession.

Happy motoring!

Hi Jeff, Congrats on the Tundra. How would you compare how it rides vs the chevy other than no vibration . What kind of mpg did you see on the 800 mile trip. Thanks

Add me to the Vibration Nation. Long story short, wife said "I know you're ready for a new truck so go ahead and start looking. Had my truck in getting the tailgate assembly fixed and saw a 2015 C20 edition on their showroom floor with a very hefty rebate. Worked with them for a few days until we got to an agreed upon price/trade. So, at around 4-500 miles or so, I started to notice a vibration at freeway speeds. Worst seemed to be around 70-75. Took it in and they checked everything and said, "we got it better but there's on tire out of balance". They ordered a tire and replaced it two weeks later. Took it in and they replaced it and said "good to go". Picked it up and headed home and it was clear the issue wasn't resolved. At this point I'm starting to get PO'd. Got a call to go pick up my plates and sat and talked with the sales manager about my issues. I told him I hadn't spoken with the service department because I hadn't yet cooled down enough and going in full rage wasn't going to get me anywhere. He was not pleased and said he'd be in touch in a day or two. Called and told me to schedule a drop off, they'd get it fixed. Anyways, this time they had it for 3 days and did some sort of Pico??? test and sent the data to GM engineers. I'm now in the waiting process for GM to get back with service. I'll keep everyone posted.

Yes it did. Going to experiment some more this weekend and see how much I can reduce them. I've only got up to speed twice since putting them on but they feel significantly reduced thus far.

Abominable,

Did you have a chance to test the clamps this weekend with the front ones, distance from the original u-bolt etc? Thanks!

Hi Jeff, Congrats on the Tundra. How would you compare how it rides vs the chevy other than no vibration . What kind of mpg did you see on the 800 mile trip. Thanks

I drove the Toyota and a Ford. The Ford with 20" wheels also had a rougher rider. I'm sure that because of my issue on the last 4 months, I am being overly sensitive. The Ford with the 18" wheels rode better but I wanted to try the Toyota before i made a decision. If I hadn't just lived through this mess, I probably would have purchased the Ford. I own two Mustangs and it would have complimented the car coral nicely. The Toyota was hands down the best ride. I purchased a Limited with 20" wheels and 275/55/20 tires. This would be the same size tire as my two LTZ Silverados and there is no comparison in ride.

My first Silverado had the lower gears (I believe 3.08s, but I could be wrong), so in 5,000 miles I was averaging about 19mpg. The second one had the higher gears (I believe 3.42, but I could be wrong) and I was getting around 17mpg. I only had it for 600 miles, so not enough miles to know if that was going to be the true number. The second Silverado did have more get-up-and-go because of the gearing. I have no idea what gearing the Toyota has but it has way more power. The mileage did suffer. The first 500 miles over my trip, I averaged just over 75 ,vibration free, MPH and I was at 14.8 mpg. The last 300 miles, I locked the cruise at 70 MPH and was at 15.9mpg. All of these estimates listed are per the vehicles on board computer, no math was done on my part :)

I wish you all the best with your trucks! I had to eat the cost of a small car in this journey but I will never purchase a GM again and that my friends is a life lesson. I will try to keep an eye on this isse and update my website of dontbuyasilverado.com with more links to articles, youtube videos and forums. I'm sure I'll get contacted by GM legal at some point :)

Merry Christmas all!

Thanks for the info I was pretty sure you were going to say the tundra rode better. I rode in a 15 tundra and thought the same thing you said no comparison. Even though the tundra does not have all the bells and whistle its proven. I think this why Toyota doesn't make big changes for atleast 10 years just stick with what works.

Merry Christmas

I was wondering the same thing. I read somewhere can't remember where to place the clamps 6 inches in front of the rear axle and would help or stop the drive line clunk. Not sure how it will affect the ride.

My 2015 Silverado 4.3L V4/V6 shakes hard when in V4 at 1000 to 1400 rpm when under load. It only happens when in V4 mode, and when in V6, not an issue at all. It is very annoying in the City where slow driving and idling a lot. GM has opened a customer care case but it does not seem like it will result in a fix. The dealer has uncoupled the cab, uncoupled the exhaust, tried the TSB on the matter. Brakes, tires, wheels, driveshaft, torque converter, rear end... all check out. I think it is a major design flaw and wonder whether other members here are having the same problem.

The truck is a Z71 crew cab, standard (6.5') bed. It has a leer canopy.

Once it shakes, the vibration resonates quite a long time. Ideas?

Love my Chevy

Update:

Got a call from the dealer today after requesting a buy back from general motors and it has been approved by the district manager. The only catch is I have to buy another Chevrolet which is not what I was interested in. So with that being said I am thinking about asking if they can put me in a 2016 Camaro. I am not interested in another silverado and don't really need a truck anyway. Just wanted one. Anybody else get something different with their buyback other than another truck?

Take the the deal on the buy back and dive your new 16 to the nearest Ford, Ram or Toyota dealer and trade it.
