Shake or Vibration Issues

I also read that GM is trying to fast track improvements into the 2015 1500 one of which is an 8 speed transmission...Very suspicious if you ask me. Like they know they have a problem and that is their way to fix it. That would bode very poorly for those of us with 2014 6speeds that may be faulty.

 

That's an excellent observation. I can't believe I didn't think of that. That sounds EXACTLY like something GM would do too! (Oil consumption on the GMT900's anyone?). I might be dumping this truck sooner than I think.....

 

 

EDIT: Actually wait the more I think about it, the 8 speed is only on the 6.2's. This theory would make better sense if the 8 speed was going into all of the trucks.

I posted my vibration problem about 2 months ago, here's my story. I bought a 2014 Silverado LTZ when they first came out in August 2013. The very day I drove it home, I called my dealership and told them something was wrong as it was shaking/vibrating above 70 mph. At first, they replaced 2 tires, (Goodyear ls) as they would not road force to the numbers they were looking for. After that they told me that the vibes were within spec and it was not a warranty issue because on their vib machine it wasn't too bad, but I knew the problem wasn't fixed although it was a little better. My vib was above 73 mph and only noticeable in the backs of the seats. Recently, after following Chappys post, I called them back and wanted them to look at my ring and pinion as it always vibrated above 73 mph. I delt with the shop foreman at my dealership and he has been very respectful. He said bring it in and we will measure the backlash on your ring and pinion. After he measured it, he said it measured anywhere from 5,000ths to 8,000ths and went ahead and replaced it. While he did that, he took my driveshaft to an independent driveshaft expert here in Tucson and had it balanced, he said it was 2 oz off. He said the new ring and pinion's backlash measures between 9,000ths and 10000ths , which he said is almost perfect. So I went and test drove it with him riding shotgun. The truck still vibrated at 73 mph+, but it was a touch better than before, but still not right. He suggested we swap tires to the ones they are putting on the new 2015 truck. He said he went through 8 tires, (continental) to get 4 that road forced between 8 and 11. He also mounted them on 2015 rims which were the same 20" rims I had before. I have since driven the truck a good 120 miles on the highway above 73 and guess what... Absolutely no vibration. The truck rides like a Caddy at all speeds. I never thought my truck would ever ride like it's supposed to but it does now! I think the ring and pinion replacement helped, but I believe my problem all along was those Goodyear tires!! I hope this May give some of y'all hope but I know not everyone has the same problem. Just based on my own issue, get rid of the Goodyears!! It has taken me 1 full year to get my truck to ride like it's supposed to. Thanks to this forum, I kept hope!

8 speed tranny will only be in Trucks with the 6.2L, are you sure of this?

Low speed issues, 40mph to 55mph would be driveshaft and rear end issues.

High speed issues 65mph to 75mph would be driveshaft slightly out of balance and crappy tires in my opinion.

These trucks have issues with rear end launch shuddering 1-2-3 if your truck bumps into 2nd gear have your rear end ring and pinion checked.

For what its worth I have NO vibration at any speed. 2014 LT dbl cab V-6.

My 2011 2500HD that I just traded was way smoother than the 2014 1500 I just bought.

I second that. Mine treated me very good for many years.

Yeah only the Silverado/Sierra's with the 6.2L V8 and the GMC Yukon Denali are getting the 8 speed. The rest will still get the 6 speed.

My truck was exactly like yours with shudder vibration around 40mph - 55mph insisted they check the drriveshaft, they replaced it out of balance! This took most of the vibration out, but some vibration remained and a 1-2 shift bump shudder could be felt now being more consistent.

New rear end has been order, I will let you know when it is installed.

Part on back order, 2-3 weeks away they must be replacing alot of these im my humble opinion.

Does anyone know if more than hunter makes a road force balance machine? My dealer said they rf balanced my tires but according to hunter website they dont own the machine to do it.

8 speeds on the 2015 6.2L trucks only 2016 they are supposed to show up on all trucks, Ford will get them in the 2016 F150's. This tranny is the brain works of GM and Ford.

OK... that's 2 trucks that have been fixed (Chappy and dmr183) and both related to replacing the ring and pinion. I have not heard anything back from Chappy since his was fixed on July 17. I sent him a PM hoping to get an update, but no response yet.

So it took a new ring and pinion, rebalancing of the driveshaft and many sets of tires to get it smooth, this doesn't really narrow it down. Its good to see his problem is fixed, though.

GM and Ford are now working together to develop a 10 speed transmission. The 8 speed, as I understand it, is a GM-only product on the GM vehicles. Ford might have an 8 speed as well but this isn't the transmission partnership that's been reported in the news.

Yes, Im off. Its a 9 and a 10 speed that they are working on, 10 speeds are supposed to go in the 2017 GM trucks, 9 speeds are for front wheel drive cars only.
