2014 owners, what octane are you running?

Recommended Posts

Just like the title says. I know the truck can sense Ethanol content, and adjust timing and fuel tables accordingly, which was proven by the Lingenfelter tests. I wonder if it does the same thing depending on which octane you run. Also, when Lingenfelter did the dyno test on E10, they had 93 octane in it. Thoughts?

I just got my truck on Saturday so I haven't had a chance to fuel up yet. I asked the dealer what gas he put in it and he said just reg. 87 Octane Unleaded with E10.

So I am curious myself what other people are running.

Congrats on the truck, looks good. I know on my 2012 Hemi Ram they recommended 89, and I confirmed running 92 and 93 octane yielded better fuel economy. The old theory was run what the manual says, anything above is pointless, but I believe newer FI systems and ECM's are smarter and will adjust to different octanes.

I run the cheap stuff. I ran it down to empty and put E85 in it once. I could tell a slight difference.

What mileage you averaging?

Justin from Black bear has a post telling why you need to run 89 or better as the 5.3s are always knocking on 87 even if you cannot hear it. Results in a greatly retarded timing I imagine.

As for the cheap stuff. The mfgs say tier three gas. This is really critical with direct injection to keep stuff clean.

As for me, 89 chevron or shell and as little food product in the gas as I can find.

Thanks for the info, was he referring to the new 5.3's or the old ones? I have Shell and some other top tier stations around me, so I can run good gas.

The 900 model. I do not know if Justin has worked with the new 5.3 but would bet same conditions. As for the 800s not sure but would bet. I had to look around for a station that did not jump the 87 to 89 by 20-25 cents. Finally found one that only jumps 15 cents on the octane increases.
