2014+ Gas Mileage (MPG) Topic

Recommended Posts

Had to do a trip to the other coast of Florida and it was all lower speed highways for over 4 hours one way, so I thought I'd see how high I could get my MPG. Worked out great since I've never passed so many police in that amount of time. Only outside mods are the Bakflip, AMP steps, and raised tire pressure. Max speed limit was 70 mph for 30 miles, but the rest was 60 or less. Also included my at the pump records for those who don't like the DIC numbers. My DIC averages .6 over what I calculate at the pump.

Few more from the trip. I took a few cause the mpg's kept going up...enu9apuh.jpgesa5apa2.jpg

Best 50 average is 25.1 from the same stretch

You do realize that "best" and "average" are two completely different things...the best is simply the best you got during that said averge point... I've had my truck go has high as 25.5, but when filling up and hand calculating (the ONLY THING THAT MATTERS) I never got over17.8 mpg....

Whatever, I'm done talking. Internet know it all's. Have fun. I'm sorry I didn't go 400 miles in that trip to get you a 400 mile average. But in my opinion a best of 25.1 over 50 miles is awesome and a best of 29.7 over 25 miles is amazing. Don't really care what you say. If you want calculations then here based on where my fuel gauge was when I got home I used about 10 gallons of gas on a 246 mile round trip. So over all for the whole trip I averaged about 24.6 MPG (give our take) so take the pen and paper and sit on it and rotate. Next time I'll drive 400 miles just to appease you but I tend to think you'll still find something to cry about.

Anyone here who gets good gas mileage is going to get scrutinized because the rest of us are jealous. Last winter I got about 12 city and 17 highway, this summer I got about 14 city and 20 highway - lifetime average is 15. My neighbor has the same exact truck in 2013 a model and gets about 3-4 more MPG than me. I drive like a damn grandpa so I've given up and questioning other people's secrets or mileages. It is what it is. When I see people like you posting awesome MPGs, it just gives me hope that maybe my next truck will be more lucky haha.

Those numbers aren't what I would call normal. It must have just been the right day and the right situation. My normal highway MPG is 21-23. Sorry everyone hates on it but I have nothing to gain by playing games or lying about it. I've seen a significant increase in gas mileage since my truck has gotten broken in and doing my normal everyday driving (2-3 mile trips with barely any highway) I get 14-15 MPG. I'm not saying I normally get 29 MPG over a 25 mile stretch on the highway but that day I did.

The point is you're cherry picking your data points. You're welcome to believe you're getting 30mpg but I guarantee your wallet knows the difference.

I had my cruise set on 75 almost the whole way. There was two construction zones that I was down to 45 for less than ½ mile each and the occasional torne I had to slow down to about 60 for traffic. I took the pictures I'm question during one of the momentary 60 mph time frames...

I've got about 7800 miles on mine now and avg is 18.9 mpg for all those miles. That is pretty darn good unless you compare it to a 30 mpg four banger, but for a V8, 6000 lb pickup truck, that's pretty darn good IMO.

  • 2 weeks later...

3800 mile trip to/thru the Rockies and back. Stock Z71 GMC 4x4 DC with 5.3 and 3.42 gears.

Some impressive new numbers, and hand calculated (21.723 MPG) out to within 2 tenths/MPG (21.9 MPG per DIC) overall. That is only 31 miles or 1.417 gallons of error in a 3,800 mile trip overall. That error could be in the pumps, the DIC, or my ability to fill the tank exactly at the first tank and the final tank. All tanks in between would not matter, just accurate records of gallons used and miles overall.

Now understand, some of these numbers were from going down grades from 8-10%, and at times may have been steeper. But, also remember I had to drive up just as many as I was able to come down, and I was generally only getting 13-14 MPG while ascending these grades.

Speeds on the Highways/Freeways/ Expressways/Interstates ranged from between 55-80 MPH. Some driving in towns/cities ranged from 25-45 MPH, and most of the National Parks had a 45 MPH speed limit.

No, I didn't take any pics while going 80 in WY, but I did snap a few @65 MPH somewhere along the line. I was not driving like Granny either, more like I stole it.

Quite IMPRESSED, to say the least!

this is the first legitimate post I have seen for impressive fuel economy!

I did 22.5 mpg on my 400 mile average through the rocky mountains as well in my 6.2L

but a little secret I've been holding out on and I think you can probably verify my theory..

yes you do have to go up the hills to coast down, but I think because of the amazing torque of these engines and the he fact you are trying to achieve the best MPG. if you drive like me likely your at or below the speed limit going up the hills. usually you can average about 15 mpg on the way up, but on the way down often times your at 99 mpg (using 0 fuel) while you coast.

in my Tacoma I used to shift to N all the time on the down hills. it allows you to use that inertia to get you a good distance up the next hill. in fact you can coast for miles and stay near the Posted speed limit, sometimes 10 mph over sometimes less than the PSL.

I haven't done much neutral costing in the sierra but I know it will average about 70-75 mpg while idling and coasting down a hill.

so here's my theory.. when going down hill I often will just touch the gas pedal to attain 75 mpg which is the same fuel used if I am in N but also allowing the truck to coast as if in neutral while staying in gear, essentially I am taking away most if not all the engine braking until I get to a point I am going over the PSL in which case I let off which will cut the fuel injection off and yield infinite MPG (99 mpg)

when you drive on flat ground you have to have the truck constantly in drive and constantly using fuel. there simply is no time your going to be in fuel cut unless your slowing down.

going over the mountains is a different story, your not really using a lot of extra gas getting up the hills, first off at my elevation there is less air density, this means you use less energy to push through it and it get's better as you go up in elevation. (you also tend to use less fuel cause you have less air. additionally, going up the hill slower means less fuel used. fuel you get to save further going down the other side.

I also know this is true because I consistently get about 2-3 better mpg than everyone else living in colorado

No neutral coasting while descending at all. Zero. I was letting the truck do it's thing, engine braking. Sometimes it would actually downshift 2 whole gears, depending on the grade and speed.

All those numbers were within 1.77 tenths MPG when it was all said and done. I know that some have reported up to 5 tenths MPG margin of error from tank to tank between the DIC and hand calculations. I have also had up to 5 tenths on some tanks here at home over the last year, but this 3800 mile trip is a much bigger/better statistical sample/example overall.

At the higher elevations, I was actually getting in the low to mid 20's MPG while cruising @ 80 MPH in V8 mode. When I was in V4 mode, it was high 30's and even low 40's at times on the flat tops. My truck loved the higher elevation. Here at home it is only 735-750 feet, on average.

The DI engine is much more responsive than other older gas trucks I have driven in the mountains. Not diesel level, but much better. Years ago (2002) on an elk hunt in Colorado I drove my buddies Power Stroke in the mountains, it was impressive even with a fully loaded trailer behind it. No towing on my trip though, so can't give any comparisons on that.

Never felt underpowered on the entire trip, not once. Very happy with the performance, and absolutely no hiccups. Hope everything stays the same after my trip to the dealer next week for the piled up recalls that I was avoiding until after my trip.

'14 5.3L, 3.42 gear, 4x4. Crew cab, short bed. I have been driving between Tampa and Orlando daily since I bought it. Burning 87 gas, shell or the cheap brands. 4,700 miles on the truck today. Mileage has been getting good lately. I've been averaging 18.7 to the tank per the DIC. Hwy, trips to the gym, errands etc. I can easily do 16 city. Hwy is funny. Speed, time of day, etc varies a lot. I've done up to 22 and as bad as 18. But for the most part it's about 19.5 or 20 hwy. that's with cruise at 78 or 79, Ac on. Very happy with mileage. I hear rattle sometimes, like spark knock. It's the ECM getting everything it can out of the gas. I have a sneaky feeling if I ran 93 I could get more out of it. The programming on these new trucks is pushed to the limit for MPG's.

As a side note, I've been hand calculating fill-ups. the DIC is consistently 0.5mpg HIGH. I even used the same pump on one tank to rule out the pump variable. The DIC is giving a .5mpg inflation. FYI. My 2007 BMW 335i does the same thing. About .5mpg high. Must be the law allows them to be within a certain amount and they obviously want people thinking the car is getting the best mileage possible on the test drive to BUY them.
