2014+ Gas Mileage (MPG) Topic

Recommended Posts

OK, now at 20k on the clock and a Rough Country 2.5" leveling kit, I'm doing around 18-19 MPG. I have a tank of E85 in there right now (since it's about 50 cents less than regular gas, and gas in itself is crazy here in California), I'm getting around 15ish MPG.

I have my tires down to 30 psi cold and I'm averaging 17.5 in mixed driving. My tires were near 40 upon receipt, and the mileage was the same. I don't think tire pressure makes as much of a difference as you're giving it credit for. I'd expect less than a 1 mpg hit as long as they're not too low. Anything below 30 is getting low.

I am pretty sure I read that every 2-3psi is worth ~.5 mpg. That seems to be on par on what I saw going to 38lbs cold.

I'm sure there is a limit to that math...bot sure where it is.

***Were the conditions the same, as in time of year and temp? Both of those also work for or against MPG's.

Had the recall done for the cold weather idle fire done. My fuel milage went from a

Average 20.5 to 13 mpg in the next 500 miles same roads, same trips, same me every day. 2000 miles later its came back up to 13.7 MPG. The dealer said yep that’s what happens when you do recalls…..They won’t do anymore I can’t afford for it to go down 7 more mpg.

I think that calculation comes from under inflated tire. As you get closer to the recommended pressure you're probably going to see diminishing return on that.

And don't forget, you *can* over inflate your tires. Not a good thing.

You can indeed over inflate tires, but the max inflation for truck rated tires is generally 44psi or higher. Running at 38-39 will not harm them.

I go to the dealer tomorrow for unrelated items but his will be discussed. 2014 AT Edition 5.3l

Saturday with the cruise set 110 mile round trip (90 miles highway) the DIC said 19.8mpg. On the highway portion it was 20.5 mpg. cruise set at 74mph their and back. 76 degrees outside.

Tons better so far...appears I just can't afford to drive it when it gets cold.

I would try resetting the computer and see if that helps (disconnect battery for awhile).

Just filled up again....raised tire pressure from 33 cold to 38 most of this last tank. About 25% city driving (average speed was 37 I think) and figured at the pump 18.83 mpg with DIC showing 19.2. Could not be more impressed with this rig! Changed the oil this past weekend at 2350 miles. Started to look a little dark and I always like to get the first oil change done at 2K miles or so on a new motor....makes me sleep better anyway.

For any of you "old guys" just looking for stock fuel mileage on a 6.2L/Max Tow package, I took my 5,000 mile Silverado LTZ 4-Wheel drive on a 500 mile round trip (Houston-San Antonio) this weekend. I cruised at 68-70 mph and the ending, hand calculated numbers were 20.87 mpg going and 19.9 on the return half of the trip. For an unrelated side note, pulling a 6,000 lb 26 ft travel trailer at 60 mph, is getting me approx 11 mpg. No problems to date. Good luck with your vehicles.

I am relatively pleased with my MPG. I get about 16.5 around town with 90% of that being city driving. If i go through houston on the interestates and traffic is moving at about 65, I do quite well. Yesterday I averaged almost 24 MPG going though the city. I think is so good because 1) I am not driving that fast and 2) there is a lot of drafting going on. On the open highway at 70 with no wind, I get right at 20. Not great, but better than I have had in the past. On country roads averaging 60-65 is the sweet spot for this truck where it does low 20s very well.

I have a crew cab, z71 4wd, 3.42 axle, 20" wheels, soft tonneau, no lift (yet), and stock sized tires.

Actually rule of thumb now a days is to keep the factory filled oil in for a normal oil change interval as it has certain additives that help with the break in process. And dark is just fine now a days. Dexos is going to look darker then most folks are used to.
