2014+ Gas Mileage (MPG) Topic

Recommended Posts

WELL>>>>>> firmly, I love my truck, it is everything a pickup should be plus some, but…….. GM Lies!!!! Seriously! While I have gotten 21 on the highway once, when i first got the truck (i now have 1900 miles on my truck). But even then, the most i got in town was 12. Now granted it is winter, and my truck is sometimes in auto 4x4, but I drive like a grandmother trying to milk the very best mileage i can just for kicks and the truth is this truck does 11 in city, and 16-18 highway.

I just completed putting a 2.5 inch level on it, and switched to DuraTracs 285R60 20s, and watched my mileage drop to 9ish in town and have yet to try a highway trip with it.

Based upon what i read here---THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH-- i have not done the recall yet (can you actually get negative mileage?)

Auto start greatly effects the MPG calcs., so does idle time. I noticed until it's completely up to temp it doesn't go into 4 cylinder mode. When warmed up, it goes into 4 cylinder mode more often and sooner than my 2012, it also stays in 4 cylinder mode longer compared to my 2012 including going up hill.

I'm still with holding my judgment. because I'm 2 mpg UNDER what my 2012 did.

Karnut: where are you located and what kind of temps you experiencing? I'm in Saskatoon with a lot of -20c highs, but rarely warming up as I park in heated garage at home and work, 70/30 hwy/city, and my lifetime is 14mpg with 4500 miles on it. Best tank was my second one. Light foot as I'm striving for better.

Im going by my on star app. Conroe Texas 30-60 temps,12 miles to my shop 60 mph for 5 miles, 45 to 35 then 60 for 5 miles. Hammer down when I can. I have seen 19 mph but then it gets cold for south Texas I let it warm up, it goes to 17 and change. Mix of 87 to 92 fuel 10% blend. I expect better in the summer months full synthetics first oil change. I run M5 till 45 mph then M6 Trans seems to like that the best no jerking.

Well...my mileage is only going backwards...I'm starting to think that you either buy a GM that's an oil chugging slut (900 series) or a "fuel efficient" gas guzzling whore!

No hard take offs..."slow in the drive" like rain man to the point my wife gets irritated that she's accusing me of driving like an old lady!

Recent trip from San Diego to Las Vegas.

Hey Beetle looks like a good average there. What cab? What engine? What gears? What size tires? Tonneau cover? Speed on highway approx? I have noticed that anything above 70 on the interstate really puts a beating on my trucks mpg. I guess it is like trying to push a brick through the air LOL not a lot of aerodynamics happening with a PU truck.

Crew cab, 5.3, 3.08, about 70 mph majority of the trip. Stock tires, don't know the size though, no bed cover, I don't hot dog it, maybe that's why the mpg is so good, I have no other explanation for it.

Today we had a 2012 f150 EB come into our body shop for a repair (hit a deer) and since my gas milage has been in the toilet lately I had to see what the EB was getting, he was at 15.3 and all 4 out 5 of his last fill ups where above 15 with one just slightly under 15. I went and looked at my truck and I was at 13.4 on this tank and that's about what I've been averaging lately now that it's cold. I thought to my self maybe he has a longer highway drive to work then I do so I looked at the address on the estimate and he practically my neighbor! And I can see his work from my work so we are driving the exact same roads. When I was talking to him I asked how his milage was and he said around 16 now (winter) and 21 to 23 in the summer on the high way but that he drives with a lead foot. I drive like a 80 year old man so I was surprised to see him get almost 2 mpg better then me. I didn't think the EB was that good on gas, I would say he's full of it if I didn't see it for my self.

Beetle what fuel are you using 92 octane or something? I am just starting a test in mine with nonethanol 87 octane that my local store here carries. I am planning on running a few tanks and see what happens. It is quite a bit more expensive so it will have to produce some pretty amazing results for me to continue to buy it! 3.28 versus 3.09 My next experiment will be to use some E85 I keep reading that the E85 produces more HP but gives bad fuel economy. Sounds counterintuitive, you would think that these brilliant GM engineers would have figured out by now how to run these engines on old banana peels etc like the back to the future car haha I joined the Fuelly site I think the silverspaceship is on there maybe also...... only about 1/2 dozen 2014 GM 1500 trucks on there so far.. and some of them do not list out all the options such as engine size gears tire size mods etc so you can compare apples to apples. There big thing seems to be how much highway versus city driving as a percentage still looks like a worthwhile endeavor though..

I have found that by being just a bit more careful with the right foot pressure that these 2014 1500 crew cab z71 4x4 slt 5.3 3.42 gears 20in tire trucks can produce very respectable fuel mileage. I am very happy with mine so far. The attached pic was from a few weeks back I was running 10% ethanol mid grade at the time and was on a business trip so all interstate miles.. And yes I agree with silver the colder the weather the harder it seems to get good mileage these GM engines do not seem to like the cold very much. Might just be the winter fuel mix I do not know.

Well, I have had my LTZ 6.2L/Max Trailer/Tow Mirrors for about 5 days and have put almost 800 miles on it. All the miles have been, for the most part, highway, and on regular fuel. As you can tell by the picture, it is averaging in excess of 17.5 mpg (hand calculations as well as DIC). Not bad, and its not even broke in yet. No towing numbers yet.

From Beetle:

Nothing but 87 octane......I think driving style has a huge impact on mpg's and maybe weather conditions too.

Just took my V6 on a 200 mile round trip yesterday. I had 24.5 mpg the whole way there and back. Mine has just shy of 4,000 miles on it and I am absolutely loving it. It has plenty of power for everything I need and doesn't feel like a dog at all. I don't think you would be disappointed!
