Comments on the 6' 6" bed with the crew cab

Recommended Posts

Personally I dont see how an extra 10" can affect your parking ability that much. I havent had any experience with the new half tons, but Ive driven crew cab trucks with both bed lengths (one being a half tons crew, the other being a 2500 crew short bed), and there is no difference that I can tell. But, then again, I find it fairly simple to park a crew cab with an 8' bed, with a 24' trailer behind it.

How are you guys with the longer bed getting along with it. Do you notice a lot of difference in parking lots etc.? I'm probably going to get the 5' 8" but I might drive the longer version tomorrow just to see how it feels.

I'm in the same boat as you...If you park in any spots that have the parking curbs out front I don't think it'll fit very good with the longer bed.

Plus in my garage that longer version is really tight !

Sorry op, can't help you out to much…

But the park assist does help me out when im in a tight parking lot, kinda rely on it to much, I guess.

Them crews with the std bed look freakin sweet! That'll def be my next truck!

I have the 6.5 ft box, and have noticed a difference in terms of parking and turning it, but I will gladly take it for the extra room it provides. I have been waiting a long time for this longer box offering in the half ton, keep us posted as to what u decide.

I love the extra room. Parking is a little different not enough to go back to the 5'8" bed. I seen a truck the other day with the 5'8" bed just looks un proportional now that the crew door is bigger.

After 8 years I'm still getting used to not having an 8' long box (currently have a 6.5' box). I don't care how long the truck ends up being, it has to have a half decent sized box or it's hardly worth having as a truck. I would love to be able to buy an extended cab, err double cab, with an 8' long box but that's a model that we'll probably never see again in a light duty role.

I have the 5'8" box. It looks better than the long one to me. I guess I'm just not used to seeing the 6'6" box yet. When I see one it almost looks like a long bed. I am happy GM is starting to offer longer beds though. That's something people have been complaining about for years. They are listening!

My truck sticks out a bit further in the parking garage at work, but no difference in the parking. I back it in each morning and the rear camera makes it 10X easier. I used to back up until my hitch receiver made contact with the steel cable in the garage (perfect alignment), but no need anymore,

Definitely going to get the 6'6" bed. I will prob get front and rear park assist when I decide to parallel park the 239" beast.

FYI - (from GMC's website)

Short bed 1500 crew cab (length at floor) = 69.33 in = 5.77 ft

Standard bed 1500 crew cab (length at floor) = 78.87 in = 6.57 ft

Drove the short bed version this morning. (The long one was sold already.) Felt about the same as my extended cab as far as driving in my towns narrow streets, parking etc. It has a 2" longer wheelbase than my old truck. If I go with the 6' 6" bed the wheelbase would be almost 12" longer than mine. I think offering the longer bed was a very good idea but I'm still leaning towards the short bed. Tried the safety alert system also. Gives you a gentle pulse in the seat when you drift out of your lane or you can set it to beep instead.
