HID Headlight Bulbs / HID Projector Retrofit

Recommended Posts

Thanks for doing all this guys. Just picked up a 14 SLT and as you all know already the lights are very bad compared to the very good '11 GMC I had. So I've read all the posts and am a little confused so here's my take.

Get the Morimoto Elite 9012 35w, with 35w 4300k bulbs, and canbus 9012 harness?

Is that all I'll need? Thanks again.

Looks like $150 so not too bad considering I used to put Daylighters on all my trucks for 20yrs before the '11 which stock was pretty good.

Kinda pisses you off that we spend close to 50K for these trucks and GM went backwards on the lights and a lot backwards.

No, the "CAN-Bus" is not actually a harness, just a set of capacitors. You'll need the CAN-Bus AND the HD Relay Harness. One will come included with HID kit and the other you'll have to add to shopping cart separately. They're the same price individually, so it doesn't matter which you include vs buying separate

SIGNIFICANT 'HID' REVELATIONS - IF CONSIDERING HID'S PLEASE READ:

As many of you know, HID's have been my thing on here and so I try to keep up and let everyone know about changes/problems/etc. Recently I've learned about big issues with DDM and Morimoto.

Morimoto

Looks like the Mori ballasts are no longer good with just the HD wiring harness. Not sure if Mori changed something in their design or GM changed something with the truck's electronics, but a member just installed and has the PWM buzzing and light shut-off issues. So from now on, I'd recommend all Mori buyers get the HID kit with the HD harness, and also purchase the "CAN-Bus" code eliminators!

Hi MotoMedic- Question for you. I have ordered from The Retro Fit Source the- 9005 Morimoto Elite HID Kit and Bi-xenon FX-R Stage IV kit. Charlie at TRS stated that I needed the HD Harness for the Projector retro fit but also stated that I needed the capacitor relay harness as well, which I ordered.

Is that what you are referring to above? I just ordered everything and then finished reading to the last page. (my bad) I think you are meaning for the Elite HID kit. I do not see that on the website anywhere to order it separately.

Guessing you have a Silverado? When you ordered the Stage IV kit, did you select the HD wiring harness or the CAN-Bus? Whichever you chose, you also needed to order the other separately.

As for the 9005 kit for your high beams, you should be able to install using only the included HD harness... though I'm not sure if anyone on here has actually installed HID high beams.

When I ordered the Stage IV kit, yes I ordered the HD Relay wiring harness and Charlie advised (via chat with TRS)- You will want the HD harness but also the capacitor link http://www.theretrofitsource.com/accessories/capacitor-relay-harness-link.html#.U0wci_ldXQg

I guess I'm slightly confused, for the gmc 14', going with the morimoto kit, I need the 9006 bulbs and the hd relay harness. Do I also need the capacitor harness as well? Sorry and thank you!

Yes. Moto's first post that opens the thread states that with the Morimoto you will need the HID kit, HD harness, and the capacitors

Question:

At this time, is there any aftermarket purpose-built projector for the GMC?

Is there any aftermarket complete lamp (headlight, drl, turn indicator) assembly for the GMC?

No and No. Unfortunately the Chevy's are more popular so they get the unique cool stuff first. GMC guys have to wait a little longer :banghead:

Im sitting on the fence on whether to install a hid kit or wait for a better projector or assembly. I won't be traveling where I need better lights until the fall. I may just install the 9011s and wait.

I personally would throw in the HID kit. But that's because I personally like the extra light. Also there's no telling exactly how long it may be before we see the sierra specific projector upgrades. Could be next week, next month, in a few months. Not saying it will be a long time before we see them, but with the uncertainty, I would throw some HIDs in just to be able to have the extra light incase something happens and you need the extra light for whatever reason, or if there are no projector upgrades for some time

How much are you willing to spend? DDM's are a cheap bulb upgrade. They're not perfect in stock projectors but better than factory bulbs. If you eventually plan on buying aftermarket replacement headlights, I'd avoid buying the more expensive HIDs.

so what would be the basic bulb size for the low beam if i wanted to run a xenon? just the low beam bulb size. i dont mind running without a high beam since the output is so high.

So what I've gathered is the silverado projectors are H11??

Are you guys reading this entire topic? It clearly states the stock bulb sizes and the differences b/w Silvy & Sierra headlights in the very first post.

Just making sure that's not for the regular housing and H11 is for projectors. I've seen no post about non projector bulb size so I'm just confirming it.
