HID Headlight Bulbs / HID Projector Retrofit

Recommended Posts

Don't cut the back of the housing, or the headlight lens. Heat up the sealant via oven or heat gun and take the headlight apart properly and reseal. It is fairly simply, you just have to be patient. Google the method, there are plenty tutorials around.

Hi, I have a 2015 GMC Sierra 2500HD Denali. I began reading this post which is very informative. I'm a little puzzled In regards to 35w vs 55w bulbs. It appears that using 55w bulbs in the fog light housings cause melting issues. I don't plan on changing my fog lights to HID, but I am planning on HID's for my headlights. With that being said, has anyone experienced any melting issues with using 55w bulbs in the headlight housings? Thanks, Ray

I was told once that 3" and under projector size are useless for 50 watt output and will not be any better than 30 watt and will cause issues such as melting reflectors as mentioned previous. Can any one confirm this? I believe that stock 2014 gm projectors are not bigger than 3".

Oh ok thanks will check it out. The weird thing is, i was told this by a salesman trying to sell me a kit. He was either being very honest and didn't want my reflectors to melt or he was an idiot and just told me the 3" stuff to sound good. Either way I'm happy with the 35w i run.

It's my perception after reading a bit that the difference in light output isn't huge between 35 to 50 watts. I could be wrong. But I decided to stick with 35w OEM ballasts and the best name brand (not Morimoto) Osram bulbs I could buy for my projector retrofit. I think a good bulb may be as good as some high watt cheap bulb setups, and I like the idea of an OEM ballast and recognized maker bulb. I'm not happy with the Morimoto standard bulb longevity or performance as they age (3-4 months).

Here's my choices in my full retrofit plan. Lexus RX-350 non-AFS projectors, Clear lens conversion, Osram CBI bulbs, Matsushita OEM 35w ballasts. I can wire up my own harness to fit my routing.

Actual plug and play? Seems cheap for $170

It's as plug n play as the rest of HID kits are. That's just all the stuff you would need for it to work on the Sierras. I guess TRS kept getting asked what was needed so they created a Sierra package lol. Edited by Mike1220

So for the Silverado high beams, do I need the error eliminators or not? Also, do yall recommend a wiring harness for both the high and low beams?

Also, I noticed a lot of guys are having trouble with the HID's in the fog lamps. But I also see this is for the round Sierra fog lamps and not the rectangular Silverado fog lamps. Has anyone had trouble with the HID's in the Silverado fogs with it discoloring or melting?

Thanks in advance

You will not need the error eliminators for the High beams.

Installed my 50W Morimoto kit tonight and it looks great. But now I have awful reception for some of the weaker FM stations in the area. Come in clearly when the HIDs are off but just static with them on.

Any suggestions? Maybe I need to route the power lead for the wiring harness differently?

Did you bake your lights to get them apart? If so, do you plan on using addition adhesive upon reassembly and what kind?

Check and make sure you have good solid ground connections on the HID system. I will see if mine does this, I don't know since I don't listen to the radio.
