HID Headlight Bulbs / HID Projector Retrofit

Recommended Posts

I'd try to email Phil again. HJ on Facebook is just full of halos and demon eyes.

I heard back from Josh with FastHeadlights a couple days ago. For anyone that may order from their website in the future, use the shipping selection "Online Only/No Shipping". It threw me off, thinking something was wrong, but he told me that they have everyone select that, as shipping is included. So I placed my order for the Sierra FX-R Adapter Brackets and hopefully will do my retro this weekend or next.

Are you going to bake your lights open, or cut the back? I wand to add the FXRs now (since I finally decided to keep my '15 after I installed the Motimoto's, until the new model is released that is), but I think I'm going to buy a set off ebay to mod, then sell mine after the project is done. I want to add the Clearz marker light covers while I'm at it to get rid of the giant amber lens.

I went with the 50w 5500K Morimoto kit and couldn't be happier. Absolute flamethrowers, with a nice sharp cutoff even with the stock projectors. I'm sure the FXR's will only make it that much better. A friend at work got a '16 with the LED's, which are VERY nice, but I think mine may even a tad brighter. And I just prefer the output of the HID over the LED. It's slightly warmer or something, even at the same K value. Can't quite put my finger on it.

It is stupid that GM could fix all the '14 - '15 trucks for less than $200. I'm sure most owners would even pay for the fix it GM offered one...

I go back and forth. I purchased the Morimoto retro butyl since at one point I was considering switchbacks for the LED DRLs, but I'm holding off on that for now. Since I don't have much business in the front, I'm leaning more towards just cutting the back and I think just for the projector retro it should give me the access I need.

If you don't mind me asking, what do housings go for on ebay? OEM assemblies I've found are about $1200 for the pair.

Any issues with them blinding oncoming traffic? I just want to make sure people aren't flashing me constantly, even if they are aimed properly.

Mmm, well...

Mostly, no. I had to adjust them slightly downward, and since them I haven't been flashed.

Here's some snaps frpm tonight. Pardon the jetski but there was no other place in my driveway to show the fxr cutoff.

Again this is 5500k 50w.

Lights were professionally worked on, baked and opened all the way up. Removed the permaseal and replaced with butyl for easier future work on the lights.

I bet that FXR kit is awesome.

I did my Morimoto Elite kit yesterday. Installation was a breeze. I used 3M double sided tape to mount everything.

I am definitely happy with the results. It is a nice improvement! They aren't flamethrowers like the pictures I've seen of the 50W, but the improvement over stock makes it worth while.

The low beams are equal to my LED bulb high beams for throw, and better than my girlfriends VW tiguan all around lol . What amazes me the most is the light projected into the ditches, it's almost like a separate beam out of the projector

My XB fogs are probably the best fog light I have ever seen. Just a sharp addition of white light onto the road and into the ditches as well, compliments my HIDs perfectly. Then the 30" light bar in the grille just is the frosting on top, like a mini sun in front of the truck for the night time.

So I installed my FX-Rs and Morimoto Elite HD kit (35W, 5500K) and XB fogs this weekend. On initial wiring, I lost track of a couple connectors from the relay (in a rush) and hooked the Cap directly to the ballast on the passenger side. When I turned them on, no light on the driver's side. After metering and finding no power to the driver's side ballast, I went through checking connections and discovered my mistake. I changed it to Cap>Relay>Ballasts and bingo, both lights on. I went out that night, to a closed business down the street with a level lot and wall to adjust vertical aim, and I noticed that my check engine light is on. Still on this morning all the way to work. Also discovered my remote start doesn't work now, which I'm assuming is disabled because of the check engine light. I'm wondering if my initial mis-wire gave an error, registered as a "hard" code, and I just need to have the code read and erased. Or is it something else? Anyone else run into this or have any ideas??

Last time my truck threw a code I disconnected my battery for a minute then reconnected and all good. It was from taking out my air filter and unplugging the MAF

Thanks, I'll have to check that tonight. I did disconnect the MAF sensor when removing the air box for install, and then turned ignition to run when testing the lights with the MAF still unhooked.

I got a few emails from OnStar saying that the lights weren't functioning (when I was testing and metering them) and another stating engine/transmission issue.

I had that happen with my first set of hids I got light was on and no remote start all I did was disconnect the lights and put them back and it work fine the next day I drive a little bit and the light went off after like a day or 2 and my remote start work fine You could do the battery disconnect and reconnect it
