HID Headlight Bulbs / HID Projector Retrofit

Recommended Posts

How much are you willing to spend? DDM's are a cheap bulb upgrade. They're not perfect in stock projectors but better than factory bulbs. If you eventually plan on buying aftermarket replacement headlights, I'd avoid buying the more expensive HIDs.

Dave,

I put in some 9011s lastnight. I'll run them around town thru the summer. If there isn't an aftermarket purpose built Sierra projector or assembly out by September, I'll put in a HID kit. I live in the L.A. basin. You could drive around this place without headlights and never notice.

yes im reading all of this. so what your saying is that in my 2014 sierra i can run a 9006 xenon bulb and it will fit right in the housing? i spent $30 bucks on my xenon fogs and they work great. i just want the exact bulb that i can fit right in there

Yes a 9006 will fit into the 9012 bulb socket that the Sierras use.

I appreciate this forum greatly! I followed the instructions on the first page, VERY helpful, and went with the Morimoto 5000K HID kit. I paid a local audio shop 75 bucks to install it which was totally worth it they did a great job.

I will post pictures when I figure out how, lol.

I am still debating how to do the fog lights. I have a silverado and would like to have effective fog lights. So I would rather have HIDs for the fog lights but then they wouldnt be projected and might just defeat the purpose? The pics of other members with the LEDs look awesome, but I have read that the LEDs do not project very far and are more for looks. What is ya'lls opinion on this?

HIDs. That's my thing. Until there are LED bulbs that can be as effective as HIDs, I'll be using HIDs for major lights like headlights and fog lights. So if I were you, I would put HIDs. They won't project the same way as your stock bulbs do, so I would try to keep from using too extremely bright of bulbs so you won't blind oncoming drivers. Or if you don't use your fog lights very often and you use them more for off road use than anything, then you could always put a bright off road LED pod in the place of your fog lights

I had HID fogs but they're really too bright to be used on public roads. They're awesome for empty roads / off-road but other than that you'll be blinding people like crazy.

I switched to LED fog bulbs more for looks than output. From behind the wheel you can barely tell they're on... but they do look cool! ha

Alright so here is my retrofit. Everything has just taken plenty patience & time, getting the work done, getting the lights back, installing was super easy, but then I ran into issues. I needed a relay etc. etc. I also need a warning canceler that shoud be here tuesday since I'm running into buzzing/flickering issues. I did manage to get the lights functioning last night though and I'm amazed at the result. I took some pictures for your viewing pleasure. Phil at http://www.fastheadlights.com/ did all the work on my headlights. If you guys aren't confident in doing your own work on a 1000$+ headlight give him a call I definitely recommend checking out his work.

Here's what I had done to the lights.

- Cleared (remove orange sidemarkers)

- LED Switchbacks (white driving turn signals/flash amber when on)

- FXR 3.0 Retrofit

- 5000K TRS HID's, TRS Ballasts, TRS Relay

- Warning Canceler (Coming soon)

- ORACLE Colorshift Halos (waiting on control box, had a faulty one from oracle)

Here's the outcome as of right now. The lights are 90% done, just need my new control box and my warning canceler and i'll be set.

Let me know what you guys think, any questions feel free to shoot. Oh yeah and if you talk to Phil, tell him EChavez sent ya ;)

What bulbs do you have in your fogs? And on the shot of the road, do you have your fogs on? Or is that just your low beams. Also, did you use the 35W (3five) or 55W (5five) bulbs from TRS? Also would you mind sharing how much it costed to have just the retrofitting of the FXR projector in? If you could please include the cost of HID (entire kit)/projector/cost of labor. So pretty much all costs factored other than shipping everything to fastheadlights.

Also were you able to match the HIDs to the LED DRLs? I can't tell for sure but it looks like they match in the picture.

Looks great!!

- Total cost?

- Any pics of just the halos on?

- Did you also get optional colored LED strips? I thought from pics Phil had sent me that you did or maybe that was someone else's lights

Mike, I use 25w 5000k HID's from www.hidguy.net for my fogs. So far I've no had issues and they are plenty bright. On the shot of the road I do not have my fogs on. I have another shot with them on but you can hardly even tell in the picture. I used 35w bulbs and ballasts from TRS. The costs actually vary depending on what you get, I don't have a number on just a retrofit especially since the trucks are so new and mine is the second Sierra Phil has done. If you e-mail him I know he will give you an exact quote. And yes the HID's match the DRL's perfectly. The only one that doesn't match spot on would be the turn signals, which I'm thinking I can fix with some V3 Tritons from VLED's, but that'll be something for the future.

Looks great!!

Thanks Moto! I don't remember the total off the top of my head but I did end up buying some of the parts myself and just had Phil do the labor. You can go that route or just buy everything from him, which I recommend. The oracle's, switchbacks etc. were over 500+. For an exact quote though, shoot Phil an email.

I don't have any pics of the halos just yet since the control box that turns on the halos was faulty. It was shipped out back to Oracle and they exhanged it for me, the new one should be here Thursday so I can finally play with those halos. I'll definitely post up some pics for you guys. Those were my lights, but I did not get the strips. I thought about it but decided I had the halos and that was enough. You can get those strips added if you like though. Anythings possible.

Finally my DDM kit has made it to the US. Right now it's sitting in Cali, awaiting to be put on a truck heading to LA. So hopefully it will be in by Friday and then I can finally install them and the projector fogs and give everyone an update / review on how well they work

Just talked to Phil. He said that if I were to send him my headlight housings, then he could get the FXR projectors, install them, and ship the housings back to me, all for around $600. Not too bad If you ask me!

update on my project, HIDs came in today, much faster from Cali to LA than I expected. I will be going to the hardware store to get a step drill bit so I can make the spots for the wires in the headlights and will be finishing up the fog light assemblies. (still have to finish paint on one of them and seal it to the mounting plate that I made. Before the end of the week I should have the headlights in, but fogs may have to wait till this weekend or more likely sometime next week since I am bringing it to dealership for an issue with the oil life remaining guage
