Bad News, tranny or rearend went down.

Well like you say, the only thing to consider is the price of an AXN code 14 bolt diff. It will be tough to find one cheap...... If you do find one they will have anywhere from 3.42 to 4.10 gears in them. The 4.10's would be optional in only the 07 and 08 Vortec Max trucks while also offering 3.73. 09 on the deepest will be 3.73, and then otherwise 3.42 so you could get one and just run as is for now.

Some guys use the GMT400 6 lug 9.5" 14 bolt as well and just adapt the disc brakes to them...... but your truck would already be drums to start with so i dunno about that.

Or........ build your 10 bolt. Considering you fragged an open carrier though which as far as I am concerned is leaps and bounds stronger than a Gov Lock.... I would get the heavier diff.

New carrier, axles, gears, tru trac...done. Will be plenty strong and much cheaper in the end.

New carrier as get the 14 bolt rear-end or just keep my current one & rebuild it?

or get an used 10 bolt rear-end?

One is a locker and the other is a torque biasing limited slip. So the difference is everything. The lockers have good street manners too and you will never peg leg. I drive on snow, ice, rain, gravel, mud and pavement with mine. The only change I noticed is on a slippery road I generally stay hooked over the peg leg gov lock which would spin if you throttled it. I never liked stuff like the tru track as it doesn't lock... it can't. It just shifts power around in theory lol. I mean my truck is stock ride height with stock size all terrain tires that I daily drive like anyone else.... not some weekend warrior. The guys that bag on the lockers the most have generally never even driven anything with one lol. I have no trouble cornering, even on slippery icy roads. Yes the locker slips to let you turn..... I let people drive my truck in the winter and not one complained... or even noticed anything. But get what you think will work best.

Okay man thanks for the info. I say the Detriot locker probably cost more than the Tru-Trac. But I never do any off-roading, just need something for winter time when it comes to snow.

Edit: If I did get the 14 bolt rear end, then I gotta get new wheels, I definitely don't wanna spend more than I have too!

Didn't they make the 1500 HD? with a 14 bolt??

Might as well do everything at once so I never have to mess with it again, hopefully.

1500 hd and light duty 2500 are the same truck. Both are 8 lug.

Ahhh I figured! Just my luck. I don't wanna get new wheels bc its going to be 8 lug now with the 14 bolt.

No idea what to do really, might as well rebuild my 10 bolt with new axles & install 4.56's.

Trutrac + 4.56s + master install kit + axle shafts and call it a day.

You're not the only one to ever have a rear-end go out for no apparent reason. For the mods on your truck and the driving you do, the work/cost for a 14bolt would be a waste.

No. Keep your 10bolt. You will need new carriers anyway. I had to replace mine when I regeared.

Thanks man! A lot of people are telling me to get a 14 bolt, but then I'd be screwed with that part of the 8 lug or could do with that hub conversion stuff. Just more money to spend. Definitely don't have that much $$$.

You went with 4.88's didn't you?

Carrier is the same on the 10 bolt and the 8.25" up through 5.13. Op needs a carrier in the rear only because his is junk. The front diff carrier does not need to change. For a mild rig the 10 bolt is fine.
