Bad News, tranny or rearend went down.

Recommended Posts

I had the G80 blow up in my old 99 Silverado at 70,000 miles. $1600 later a new G80 and transfer case as well since the fluid leaked out of it somehow over time and it was just a matter of time before it exploded as well. The earlier generation G80s in the GMT-800 half tons 1999/2000/2001 I believe) were known to blow up more frequently and rumor has it that GM/Eaton did something about it but if you do a lot of burnouts and drive the thing frequently on snowy/icy roads, it's just a time bomb waiting to go off from what I've heard. But there have been others on here with 200,000+ miles with no issues, so go figure? I am glad I have the G80 in my 3/4 ton Duramax, there is so much torque that the front and rear tires loose traction easily in 4wd (Good tires too) in the snow with little throttle applied. Once the G-80 kicks in, it really helps out in the back.

Naw. They actually wear evenly now. Turns fine around corners too.

I meant it's fun cornering, can hammer it harder. After I got a locker I wore thru rears like crazy haha

My rears always wear out quick on the 05 anyway and always have. Lots of weight and I stomp on it a lot. The only way it can break the tires loose is on ice or in the rain. If I didn't have 1500 lbs in the bed it might turn the tires over....... maybe. Even hard acceleration kils the tires, lol. The good old original Detroit Locker ( so not that Tru trac torque bias thing I despise, lol) work like a dream. The only thing notable with the Detroit is the slack in the carrier with relation to the axle shafts. You can have up to 30 degrees of carrier rotation before the axles start to turn...... So yes, it will clunk now and again. Other than that, you will never know its there.

Tru Tracs have a known design flaw in them and slowly eat themselves over time. Not a big fan from previous experiences with Quaife ( exact same design unit) but after tru tracs started self destructing..... oh well, lol. I like my rear diff locked for all intents.... not interested in limited slips. That and I never understood having a limited slip designed for cornering in road racing in the back of pickup truck. I slowly convince people lol...... Guy in Calgary almost drank the forum kool-aid on performancetrucks.net about Tru Tracs...... and we talked and he bought a real Detroit Locker...... drove it all winter in a 2wd 2011 1/2 ton and loved it. The internet seems to breed fear into people about things from sources that have never owned one.

But if you liked it that's good. :)

Well guys, I went by the local dealer this morning to see how bad it really was.
Wasn't too bad as I thought, just the rear-end is shot also with the axles! So the whole rearend is out of service.
Transmission & the transfer case is fine. Its just the rear-end.

UPDATE:
So anyways, they suggest for me to get a 14 bolt rear-end off of a 2500 series truck & put it back on there.
They got one they can put back there but, it is still 3.73 gears, just a bigger rear-end. Should I go with that?
OR
Should I just keep my housing unit & get 4.56's along with new axles?
or get the 14 bolt & still get the 4.56's installed in it?
Bad thing wouldn't the HD rearend be 8 lug instead of 6?

I was gonna get new gears next Summer, but my gears didn't make it.
The place where I got my lift installed & everything is little over one hour away. I should get them to do it since they specialize in that kind of work. My plan is to get 4.56's Yukon gears in it.

Don't swap the 8 lug diff in. If you want a 14 bolt get one from an 07 up Gmt900 half ton with either a 6 liter or 6.2. Much simpler swap that way. That would be the safest route. Your trans will thank you if you regear to 4.56 no matter what diff you use.

This. I for one like my front and rear bolt patterns matching.

Just be too much if I got the 14 bolt rear-end & 4.56's too.

It would be alright if I just got the 4.56's instead?
