If your rear driveshaft is spinning and the truck won't move its the rear diff..... Putting it in 4wd and it not engaging could just be the front diff actuator not engaging because it wants the truck to move a bit to do it. You were able to get it to go in auto though so I would say that is all fine. Pull your rear diff cover and b rady to pick up gear teeth.

+1 if the rear driveshaft is spinning but the truck is not moving you have a diff problem or a broken axle.

And BTW it is not going to go into 4WD with the shafts spinning and no front wheel speed. It's kind of a safety thing just like if you are spinning the rears on ice and try to got to 4HI it will not go in till front and rear wheel speed matches. You have something broke in the rear diff, since you didn't know what spider gears were I would suggest calling a hook to come pick up your truck and take it to a respectable shop

Kinda makes sense with the wheel speed & the 4HI won't engage. Yeah, I gotta do something.

i had a 4L60 go on my suburb it completley grenaded at about 115k. it would only work in when i put it in 1.

Least you had first gear.

No need to crack the cover. If the D-shaft spins and no go, you've got the answer. Tow it to a qualified shop.

Have the trans checked over as well. A friend lost his spider set and it took out his sunshell and a few other parts

If your trans is spinning the driveshaft forward and reverse then as said you blew the rear. If you put it in 4H and get the truck rolling some it should go into 4 wheel drive, the sensors are looking for wheel speed in the rear tires to engage but you run the risk of jamming the rear gear parts and locking up the rear diff if you drive it

I had it towed to a shop yesterday evening. Might as well fear the worst.

Probably just the rear diff is all you'll need done. Wanted you to be sure and check trans just in case. From your description doesn't sound like the diff failure was too catastrophic
