Bad News, tranny or rearend went down.

Recommended Posts

Well, last night I had to run to the grocery store & get a couple of items. Everything was fine until I about 20 feet away from turning into my grandma's driveway. Thats when everything in pretty much went straight to hell.

I think I lost my transmission and/or rearend all at once. Had the truck in gear & it wouldn't do nothing at all. 4 speed auto, put it in all the gears & it wouldn't do nothing at all. So, I decided to put it Park & then back into one of the gears...nothing at all....Engine was just revving up. Got outside talked to my grandma, she said try it one more time. Luckly I put it in first gear & it barely made to the driveway & got it parked. Safely out of the road.

So, I decided to put in it Drive & push the E brake down & got out. Looked under the truck & saw the driveshaft kept spinning. Even in reverse. I think it did in neutral also, but I was so frustated last night I couldn't remember if I tried it out or not. This evening after I get off work, I'm gonna try it out & see what happens. Last couple of weeks, my truck has been slipping in the rearend I do believe & I'm thinking thats what is caused it. So, hopefully its the rearend & not the transmission.

So what should I do with the truck? Take it to the local dealer? or some garage?
Just need advice & greatly appreciate everything.

'07 Chevy Silverado LT2 5.3 with about 159K
6" BDS along with 35" Toyos.....thats what probably did it in was the tires.
I was gonna get new gears next Summer, looks like it will be sooner now.

Buy a Detroit locker or something like that maybe a true trac like I had in my 2002 and Don't look back, don't put the same g80 back in they are garbage and their weaknesses really get exposed if you run big tires.

If its the rear end you should be able to toss it in 4high and drive just fine that would tell you for sure if its the tranny or the rear end

Lost your spider gears and probably have taken out several hard parts in the trans.

BTW, never use the words "tranny" and "rearend" in the same sentence.

Alright. If you are positive you don't have the G80 Eaton rear locker/differential then I'd still go ahead and pull the cover off the rear diff and take a look in there to see if things have blown up, which I'm betting is the case, but with your millage, I suppose the Tranny could have gone south or even the transfer case.

UPDATE: So, I went back to my grandma's where my truck is. I started it up then put it gear while being in 2WD, it wouldn't move at all. Driveshaft was spinning in all postions, R N D 3 2 1. Even the front driveshaft was spinning. Didn't even have 4WD engaged.
Well, speaking of 4WD, I tried to put in 4WD, but the dial kept blinking at 4H & well I tried to put it in 4L & it did the same thing.
Once in drive, while my truck is sitting still my speedometer keeps steady between 5 & 15 mph....So, I have no idea whats up with that.

Then.....I put it in Auto & somewhere it moved.....all I did was back up & have the front of the truck facing the road instead of the rear.
While making a cling type metal tapping sound.
What do you guys think about that? I just think everything is ruined down there. :(

Maybe it is ur tranny then...if you have it in 4hi and front driveshaft was spinning it should have been acting like a front wheel drive car. I'd start checkin oils, did you pull trann dipstick? Smell the oil? Pull diff covers off?? Check t-case oil too. Start narrowing it down man.

Now the way you are talkin makes me lean towards a t-case acting weird. Start checkin oils, it will tell you.

See the weird thing is that I didn't even have it in 4HI & the front driveshaft was spinning....Then I tried to put it 4HI & it wouldn't do anything. The Dial kept blinking.
