I have a 2003 GMC Sierra 4X4 with the 5.3L Vortec. It has the stock single exhaust on it. I want to convert it to true dual exhaust so it's it straight back from the manifolds. I also want glasspack exhaust, although I am open to suggestions. I want it to rumble all the time and then really sound amazing when stomping on it. Now I don't want it to be quite as loud and obnoxious as a straight pipe Harley, but it must have a nice low rumble. If anyone knows of a kit that can give me true dual pipes without any mufflers I would be interested. I am really liking the sounds of the true cherrybomb (or like) glasspacks. I've used them on other cars and SUV's before and really liked the sounds I got out of them.

Fact. The only thing taking out the cats will do for you is increase volume. If you are in a no emissions state, that's no problem. However the cats now-a-days do not take away power. You wont gain any power either by taking them. In fact, you will probably be taking away some of your computers ability to balance the fuel/air ratio because they (if i am not mistaken) have O2 sensors behind or in the cats.

The after cat O2s just monitor cat efficiency. The ones ahead control the fuel mix. But removing healthy cats nets nothing, you're right. And duals with glass packs will be loud and obnoxious.

You could get a muffler shop to bend you a custom setup and put a dual in-dual out Magnaflow muffler on it. They have an internal X-pipe design, which will help with scavenging, and you will have an unrestricted system. I would recomend the 14" case. Its nice and loud without being annoying to those around you, but it will tend to drone inside the cab if you have a crew cab. I ran one for a while on an 06 2500 and liked it. i am running the 28" case now, and its nice and mellow without being too quiet.

Just dont try to go "old school" and remove, or gut, your converters. like others have said, they are not the same as when they first appeared, and are far more efficient. Not to mention, if you leave them, you keep the computer happy. An unhappy PCM can reek all kinds of havok.

Also, IMO, Flowmasters sound like poop, especially after a few thousand miles when the baffles tend to break loose and start to buzz and it sounds like the truck is running under water.

Hi,Patwtfd37

True duals leave the engine in two different pipes. One pipe had a muffler, the other was straight. If you have a 4.6 Mustang GT with catless x-pipes and flowmasters and than x's will be raspier and h's will be deeper, but not much difference in sound output. Personally I think you should run mufflers and no cats, not cats with no muffler. Cats sound like crap acting as a muffler. The x pipe would be louder but the h pipe would sound deeper in my opinion.True duals sound provide better performance because there is less back pressure.

What I am really looking for is either a system that has two cats and everything from the manifold/headers up to through the intermediate pipe. I would supply my own mufflers and tail pipes. Or what a out splitting my stock "y" pipe and making it into two straights after the cats into two mufflers and then out the back of the truck. I want to leave the cats on it I just don't want it to have one tail pipe, a full sized truck need dual exhaust with the two tail pipes either straight out the back under the bumper or coming out just in front of the rear tires. Of course that's just my opinion.

the SS and some 2500's has what you are looking for. it's a true dual piping from the manifolds, cats intermediate pipes, to the muffler

So what I need to look at is stock SS pipes? I can do that. It might be cheaper than some of the aftermarket stuff. They boot right up to the 5.3? I'm new enough I can't remember which motor comes in the SS's haha.

  • 7 months later...

Cut the y pipe run true duals with an x pipe to even the flow and produce better sound put two super 10 flows or two dynamax bullets. I also heard that spintech spiral flow mufflers are really loud. Also the SLP Loudmouths are as well!

60 dollar exhaust in my sig, it's pretty loud... the only mufflers left are the resonator and cats because they take out the high pitch. I watched a lot of video's and I've owned a lot of small block v8's as many on here probably have. I'd recommend leaving everything before the catalytic converters alone and go with massmudweiser94 if you want spend some cash.

I had a 78 monte carlo with a 305, 1"-3/4" primaries to 3" collector long-tube headers straight out to side pipes (long straight pipe surrounded by fiber glass) and it was quieter than my truck is.

check out the video's in my sig.
