2014+ owners having issues with their truck?

Recommended Posts

Just took my truck in yesterday for my first oil change and tire rotation and found out one of the lug nuts wouldn't come off, also took it in because of the rear power sliding window regulator broke like i see so many in this post, have to wait for parts for window.

Has any one notice when your 5.3 motor goes from V4 to V8 you can hear a very faint squeak noise? When I first heard the noise I thought it might be an exhaust hanger but as I heard it several more times while starting to accelerate I noticed it was the changing from V4 to V8 mode.

I have noticed the chirp or squeak noise when switching from v4 to v8 mode. Only hear it when windows are down. Been trying to google similar issues and this forum came up. Would like to know if this is normal. Have you heard an explanation of this since you posted this? Thanks

my service tech told me it is just the cam adjusting from V4 to V8. I don't think it's a reliability issue, just a major annoyance when it is hot out and you have the windows down.

Much to my dismay, I noticed my windshield was cracked after returning home from a week of traveling for work :(

The crack is basically a long curve that runs for 3 - 5 inches on the passenger side of the windshield - you can't feel the crack from the inside or outside. To me it seems like a manufacturer defect that should be covered under my first year of warranty. Anyone have any experience with something like this? There's no reason to believe it was from impact.

Will post pictures when I return from this week on the road :P

Today it was 15 degrees, I drove like 6 block then let it sit for 2hrs and when i started it up it did not have an extended crank but puffed black smoke then i drove 6 more blocks and let it sit for 20mins then started it and had very little black smoke, so i dont know why they smoke when its cold. There is a service bulletin for the extended crank and says its normal and can take longer to start the colder it gets, but it doesnt say anything about the rich black smoke. I have a calibration engineer at work that thinks its cause being DI the fuel is spraying in the cylinder wet and when its cold the engine may only fire on a portion of the fuel that actually got vaporized during the combustion cycle and the rest that didnt vaporize then burns as raw fuel, it kinda makes sense to me, but if thats the case then every DI engine should puff black when its cold out. Any thoughts

‘Day Gents. Re. black smoke and extra cranking on cold (-15 or colder, basically all freakin winter) start up. I too am experiencing this issue. Had it before and after the latest “flash” at the dealer. Was just wondering if anyone that has bolted open their exhaust flapper valve or removed it, are experiencing the same issues? My apologies if this question has been asked. I have read hundreds of postings and the mind has gone to mush, I may have missed it. Thanks.

But, I still want to keep her. She just about has me trained.

A Google search seems to indicate that yes it is normal to have some black smoke but it should be hardly noticeable. Mine has a slight puff but I have seen internet video depicting some strong solid blasts of black smoke from these 2014 DI GM trucks. Kind of looks like the old Diesel powered Belarus tractor firing up in subfreezing weather it takes a few seconds for the smoke to stop belching LOL

Stopped by my dealer yesterday and started the work order for my backlit radio knobs not illuminating. I also did point out that my gearshift does hit the key when moving the shifter into park when the steering wheel is tilted all the way up... told them that its no biggie for me since I ride with the seat all the way down in the lowered position and don't need to use the tilt for exiting and entering...

There response was if the radio knobs should be backlit that they will be repaired.

While at my dealer I ordered the transmitter and faceplate (buttons) for the Home Link as this is an option I want and it did not come in the package with my truck. I know I could do it cheaper as I have done this in the past with Home Link buttons of eBay, but this truck could be a keeper. I also will install some power fold mirrors when I complete my research on the project. I did a pair on my 13 Silverado and the mirrors that I acquired for my 14 has all the bells and whistles on them so whatever I can make work I want to without breaking the bank... would like to do the mod with the harnesses and buttons as were designed, as I did the mod on my 2013 with aftermarket switches and relays. The new mirrors even have the blind spot sensors in them so I need to find out how they work, if sensors are involved and if that can be made operational.

I suppose I am lucky because I have no smoke on startup, no vibrations to speak of and no starting issues of any kind. I really luv the 2014 and the nice quite ride in the cab... way to go GM.

If this truck was made in Japan, there would be designers and engineers committing suicide left and right for bringing such shame to the company.

Remember that a lot of problems with these trucks are assembly quality control related. Rattles, squeaks, vibration, and paint problems are in this category.

My dealer is working with me on repairs even fixing a dent that neither one of us knows how it got there.. anyways. I have a drive train clunk when under moderate acceleration from a stop. Anyone else have this. They drove a few other new 14s on the lot and I was told "they all made that clunk"

I have a drive line clunk. I was reversing into a parking spot and had my window down. I put it in forward to move up and it clunks. You can try this as well just shift back and forth not moving. I brought this to my dealers attention and even demonstrated for the service writer and their answer was it's normal.

Mine makes the clunk during light to mid range acceleration. It acts as if it's confused as to which gear it should be in. I've experienced this on other late model electronically controlled transmissions too and I'm not sure it's something GM will ever be willing to address. It kinda' makes me miss the days of a good ol' fashioned Turbo350 tranny that shifted when you wanted and didn't clank around trying to determine which gear it wants to enter at a specific RPM based on a fuel efficiency programming algorithm. Some of this can be programmed out via aftermarket tuners, however it would void the warranty and therefore we're likely stuck with GM's confused factory shifting calibration. One of my biggest disappointments in this new drivetrain is the horrible shifting characteristics of this transmission. It feels like one long gear and it seems to almost freewheel when you accelerate hard and let off. It badly needs to be programmed for a crisper shift. It's a truck, not a Continental Town Car, therefore it would be nice to at least know the transmission is shifting by feeling it a little bit. I can't imagine how much they're softly grinding/fading the clutches together to give it that feathered feel as opposed to letting it shift like a normal transmission.

I agree it's very annoying and for most drivers/passengers it comes across as being something very wrong with the vehicle. I find it sad that I have to explain to my passengers this is the way a $50K new truck is designed to drive, along with the 40-50 mph wobble feeling, or the seatbelt casing above the backseat that flies off every time you use the belt, or the blown front speaker on this high end Bose system, or the extended delays in the NAV system when it can't find a common local address for 5+ minutes and gets stuck "searching", or any of the other little idiosyncrasies that come with owing a 2014 GM truck product.

And I really hate to sound this nit-picky because as a whole I really love this truck (or what it's supposed to be), but I have been highly disappointed in all the issues that you would not expect from a new vehicle. I guess having driven an AMG Mercedes for the last 5 years my expectations were set a little higher, and now I'm being reminded why I left the GM product realm to begin with...
