2014+ owners having issues with their truck?

Recommended Posts

Listened for the clatter noise at start up this morning and it was 45degrees in my garage, no extended crank but just a slight clatter noise and with my head over the top of the engine sounded like it was coming from under the intake, like maybe the injection pump. When its really cold out and it does the extended crank the clatter noise is a lot louder. Thinking maybe its cause the pump bleeds cause the injectors leak down and is priming back up. Any thoughts

I noticed when I started it yesterday that it did make lots of noise. But I get a lot of noise from the motor on top of that, so i shrugged it off. It ticks all the time. But there was a loud clatter when I did the cold start.

Yes the loud clatter noise that is only there for like 1/2sec when engine starts is what I always hear but my engine is super smooth, all I hear is the injection pump making the normal tick noise that all DI pumps do. It wont clatter again until it has sat like 7-10 hrs usually

Today after work 55degrees and no extended crank/smoke or clatter noise. I also was thinking at work today that if the injectors were leaking it would be going in the oil while sitting just like diesel does when it has leaky injectors so i figured id check my oil to see if i could smell or see extra, well i cant really smell any gas but it is about a 1/2in over the full line so tomorrow i am stopping by the dealer after work. Be interesting to hear if any of you guys having the extended crank/smoke issue have extra oil on the dipstick

Someone in another thread had suggested simply turning hte key, to get power to the fuel pump. Let the system prime up first, as DI is higher pressure. Gonna try that tonight after my truck has been sitting for 12 hrs.

One more thing, has anyone else noticed at the first start up after sitting for a long time other then the extended crank/black smoke that when the engine fires something under the hood makes just one loud rattly/crackle sound. Im trying to pin point it but havent opened the hood yet then started it to really listen where it comes from. In case any of you want to try it you have to open the hood then push the hood latch back down so it trips the hood open sensor before it with remote start, just make sure to release it again before trying to shut the hood :)

My truck reacts the same. extended crank time, puff of black smoke and then a short rattle sound. The dealer tells me. "the smoke is normal, the rattle is just the cold engine".. Wonder if GM would approve of this statement. I was thinking the rattle had something to do with the clapper valve in the exhaust system just flapping around, or a loose heat shield. As for the black smoke, who knows..

Also, still am dealing with the vibration issue, and now my new found gas mileage loss after the ECM flash to prevent engine fires. Just drove 750 miles, average speed of 70mph at 17mpg average. Last trip before flash was about 21mpg. Big difference, same driving speed and such.

With all newer vehicles I always turn the key on and let the computer do it's thing... I say give it at least 3 seconds to do it communicating and then I twist to crank. This is a good rule of thumb for all.

My 2014 Crew has a little over 400 miles now and has not failed to start in -15 degree temps, has no vibrations and great radio reception. I couldn't be more pleased except for the holes from a bed liner that the dealer made... Now after contacting GM directly about the LED rings on the radio and fan control knobs they would not give me an stand one way or another. They just told me to contact my dealer. Sounds like an issue that will depend on your relationship with your dealer if you will get it fix or not.

I am sure the clatter noise is coming from the injection pump area, I crawled up in the engine and put my head down by the intake and that's where it sounds like it coming from. only does it under 35degrees and has sat for 7-10hrs

I don't think that will work but you can try. The reason I say that is when you remote start the vehicle the system powers up for 2-3 seconds before the engine even cranks so that would be enough time to build any type of pressure if need, also the fuel system is supposed to hold pressure for the simple fact that you don't have to sit and what with key on. I mean really if I wanted to have to turn the key and wait to start it I would buy a diesel LOL

I talked to a technician last night and he said that there is a service bulletin for the extended crank in cold temps around 0 degrees it could take up to 7sec to start and if its 50 degrees it takes 1.5sec and GM says it normal operation for a DI gasoline engine. He told me that when they say its normal that they are really working on a fix for it but don't want customers to worry about it. He is looking into it further for me to see if there isn't a new update of something. Im going to the dealer today to have them see why my truck with 700 miles on it is 1/2in over full on dipstick which is about a quart of oil

Interesting. I'll be checking my oil later haha.

Dang It I had to go check my Oil also. Hmmm looks like they moved the oil stick back a bit I could barely reach it on my tippy toes. Anyway it was just below the full mark with 3k on the truck. I heard that these 5.3's hold like 8.8 quarts now that is going to be expensive after the 2 year 24k service thing runs out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah I tested the theory. I didn't even hear the fuel pump engage, don't think it does till the engine is running. And yeah, I felt like I was heating up glow plugs or something haha. It was the same thing... Had been sitting for about 18 hours, cranked about 6 times, started, puffed black smoke. I'd like to note it's warmer outside(5° F), and seemed to affect how many times it cranked. Not as many this time.

Have had my 2014 Sierra Denali for a week. (Love the truck.) About 400 miles on it. When I got it home from the dealer I found out it has a major recall (from the GM phone App). The dealer did not even address it with me (not surprised--nor did they the PDI the truck, either). A few days ago I started it up, and the 8" center touch screen went dark. Also locked out all the functions with it. I restarted it and it came back on. The next day I noticed that the instrument panel settings reset themselves to the defaults, and everything went back to factory settings. Even the fuel mileage MPG was reset. I tweaked them back to my settings and all was fine. Then yesterday when I started it up the same default settings happened again. This thing is ALL software and still has some bugs to be worked out. I hope the dealer has some answers!
