2014+ owners having issues with their truck?

Recommended Posts

Too many bugs in the Mylink system. GM need to step up with the new software to fix this..

There was a bug in mine where the screen would show everything scrambled; dealer couldn't get it to do it when they had it, however; they found a software update for the MyLink in their system and reflashed it or what not. Seemed to have fixed my scrambled problem.

There was no software update from what I was told.... Just have to live with it for now. :nonod:

The black smoke/long crank only happens on the initial cold start of the day for me.

Mine is a hit and miss deal. It will do it one day and then to wont the next, it seems to very with the temp, when its really cold after work after sitting 10hrs it does it, but when I remote start it in my garage it will have the extended crank only every once in a while. I have only noticed when remote starting cause that's how I always start it when its been sitting so haven't experienced the extended crank when starting with the key.

I can confirm that the extended crank happens with the key as well. I tested that theory yesterday. Keep in mind its been really cold here, every day. So every day it happens with mine. Its been, at the very least, -4 Fahrenheit every day here since I bought my truck, with the wind, its even colder. This is sitting outside, and plugged in all the time.

Didn't any of y'all read the fine print that stated the new 2014 platforms were only designed to work properly in the South? Oh, wait, mine did the same thing this morning in 40* Houston weather. It's the first time I've experienced this and I was quite surprised by it.

When starting it with the key it sounded like an old tractor cranking over and over. Probably was 5-6 cranks before it fired up. I normally remote start it too while it's been cold down here, but our lows have been about 28*, and most mornings it's just been low to mid 30's.
This issue is another inexplicable design flaw that I can't imagine was not identifiable in the vehicle testing grounds. They're supposed to test them in a sub-zero enclosed environment and crank them successfully over and over. Maybe someone called in sick that day and GM just assumed the thing would work fine... It's utterly ridiculous that you guys up North are experiencing this daily, and now it appears those of us down South are getting some exposure to this issue as well.

My long term concern would be this will lead to premature Starter failures. If it takes anywhere from 5-10 turns before the truck actually starts, that is a significant increase in wear-and-tear on the Starter and related components, which will cause quicker wearing out.

Live in New England and have not experienced it. At the same time it is dark when I start my truck.

Just a thought, if it is a cold start issue, they may be adding a lot of fuel due to the temp sensor dumping fuel because of the temp, that may cause a little ring wash (loss/drop in compression) and that would cause a long crank and then when it does fire blow some black smoke.

-4 degrees is extremely cold, but the block heater should keep up, we have hit 0 here and it started fine for me

Im thinking just because you have it plugged in dont matter, whatever electronic senses cold start up is cold so it thinks the engine is cold, just thinking out loud.

I agree. almost like there is some sort of sensor that is malfunctioning. Because it doesn't crank slow, like a cold engine that hasn't been plugged in would. It cranks fast and consistently. Then while it's cranking, its likely dumping fuel even though it shouldn't be. I personally think its something that could be fixed in the ECM.

Maybe the extended crank is caused by the injectors leaking by while sitting since they are under a lot of pressure. That could cause it to be flooded and then also the fuel rail would have to rebuild pressure in order to start making for a longer crank.
