2014+ owners having issues with their truck?

Recommended Posts

I don't want to burst anyone's bubble, I just came from a Toyota and still own a Toyota Sienna, I think they make a quality product; however, if you think GM is criminal because you don't have a nice blue light around your radio, you will be sorely disappointed if you were to buy a 2014 Tacoma. Somehow they forgot to add a compass and outside temp gauge on the TRD models even though it listed as standard on the window sticker. You say Toyota will fix it because their customer Service is top notch? Hate to break it to you but Toyota is telling thousand of customers to bad so sad...pound sand. Same goes for some of those who are having rust on the current gen Tacoma's. If you think you'll be better of getting rid of your truck because it doesn't have appearance lights on a functioning radio, GM could care less, you already paid for your truck. Find me the flawless/perfectly made vehicle and I'll present you the alien that lives in my basement. A lot of you sound like nit pickers who didn't buy the right car from the start.

I remember when I brought my old truck. It has electric mirrors. It was built in Feb. The ones that were built a few months earlier did not because of parts not being available or something. This kind of stuff is not new. If it wasn't for the internet hardly anyone would even know. I understand it's annoying when you see it in the brochure or on someone elses truck and yours doesn't.

I think 90% of the Chevy owners would have never noticed the LED lights being missing if they didn't read it here first. BUT.. I do understand the frustration.. Either way.. get over it.. or sell the truck. Sounds harsh.. but GM isn't concerned with something this small.

Regardless of what others think I still say this stinks. This isn't something that was added after the fact as an added option pure and simple. These lights should work on all 2014 gmc or chevy trucks. It shows it on their brochure and all over the Internet when viewing the interior pictures of the truck. Acknowledging and repairing the problem for customers that would like it fixed shouldn't be an issue. It's the little things that matter sometimes because if they won't fix something as simple as lights then maybe they won't fix much of anything else either. These types of things prove just how serious a company is about quality and customer satisfaction.

For those who say the LED radio dash light issue is of no concern, I think you're missing the point. When someone pays $40-$50K for a new vehicle, they expect a worry-free vehicle with everything functioning, not matter how big or how small it may seem. I agree it's not a deal breaker in the fact that if I were looking at the truck new and it didn't have those lights working, but I had never seen it elsewhere, I wouldn't think twice about it. However, when all advertisements show them working and 50% of owners of the same vehicle have them working, then yeah, it becomes a bigger deal. Dismissing it as bad luck is not an acceptable answer.

Let's say for example your truck doesn't have a working rear license plate light. Would you care? Why would you, it's something you never see yourself. Would you tell GM to fix it after you discover it's out by getting pulled over and ticketed for it? Of course you would. Nowhere in the advertisements or sticker does it say "Vehicle comes with a functioning rear license plate light", however it's an expected assumption that it will work upon purchase of the new vehicle. And if it didn't, GM should fix it with no questions asked, and no excuses of it being that way because some trucks didn't get a certain fuse that allows it to function.

See my point? Those who are complaining aren't nit-picking, they're simply asking for what they paid for to be equal to everyone else who bought the same product. And I agree it's a nice touch. Here's a couple of pics of mine lit up around the radio knobs and the 4X4 knob, and headlight switch knob. It looks good and as we all know, everyone wants to have the latest and greatest in their hi-end truck investment. We want to compare to our Ford, Dodge, and Toyota colleagues and have them say; "wow, your interior is really cool..."

At the end of the day, everyone just wants what they paid for, plain and simple. And it doesn't bode well for GM to just ignore this simple problem because with today's social media usage and e-forums, any bad publicity can spread like wildfire. Many people in today's telematics savvy and electronic gadget loving realm very well might make a decision to not even look at a new GM car or truck based on something as simple as this "minor" issue, because it speaks volumes to the customer service behind the manufacturer, and right/wrong or indifferent, it does make a difference.

I've spent the last 13 years in market research, consumer trends, and data reporting for the automotive aftermarket, so I'd like to think I have a little background on the topic. But hey, we all have opinions, right...?

Sorry, I hate to keep adding to this long trailed topic, but it's a valid debate and hopefully something the GM Reps who surf this forum will take to their superiors after seeing so much traffic on the topic.

Us guys complaining about no LEDs just need to get over it is bullshit. When you view the truck in the brochure guess what the lights are working. Why do all of the Sierra truck led lights work?. If they were not in the brochure you would have no complaint from me. As far as I'm concerned this is false advertising. My wifes vehicle is a Kia which we have had very few problems with but when we did their service was impeccable and the problems got fixed. I have mostly owned overseas vehicles in my 48yrs of life and they were always very good to me and the service was excellent, reliability outstanding. This is my first GM product and maybe my last with a response saying they won't do anything about it. This isn't building any confidence or loyalty by treating customers this way. By the way Toyota will be releasing their newly designed Tundra and I bet they would fix this problem if they had it in their new truck. The reason I say this is because I have owned Toyota's in the past and they stand behind their products. Don't get me wrong I really do like my Silverado but I value a company that stands behind their products more than just a good looking truck. So for the sake of fairness I will wait to hear an official written response from GM on this issue or a post from someone at GM on this forum. If they really won't do anything about it I will evaluate my options up to and including a petition, legal counsel, or maybe just a lost customer in the future.

Speaking of the "brochure". Read it. Here, I'll help.

"IMPORTANT WORDS ABOUT THIS CATALOG We have tried to make this catalog comprehensive and factual. We reserve the right, however, to make changes at any time, without notice, in prices, colors, materials, equipment, specifications, models and availability."

There is no discrete "Radio LED Rings" option/RPO that you paid for, so it's considered a change in color/material. I agree that it sucks as it's probably a quality goof by the supplier, but don't expect GM to expend a lot of effort on this over a 25 cent part.

License plate lights are required by law. GM has to provide them.

By this logic, every owner of an All-Terrain delivered before the painted step bumpers were available should be asking for GM to swap over to the new bumpers. Or I guess it would be the other way around since they were shown in the catalog without the steps?

You bring up a valid point and the devil is in the details they say and this legalese you quote is their out.

The problem is that most buyer of anything, are visual oriented and expect it to "look like the picture".

Took the truck in yesterday for the lights around the radio issue and the high freq noise in auto/4x4. Here is the response from Service manager. I can live with the radio stuff. But the high freq noise is driving me crazy. Would really like to see GM come up with a solution.

Full disclosure on the reply below, I used to work at the dealership in high schoo/college and have a great relationship with this service manager. His reply below.

Got the picture of the dash lighting from you, looks like it is out of the sales brochure, Checked yours against 4 , yes 4,
other 2014 trucks, none of them have backlighting rings around the 3 knobs,Not sure why they look illuminated in the picture.4wd auto noise. To be honest, I couldn’t hear it, took Katie along, 20 year old female ears, She could hear it every time, drove another 2014, she could hear it on that one too. I could hear the same noise when engine is off and changing from 2wd to 4wd, Contacted tech assistance, they have no cases or complaints on this yet, He seem to think it is a normal electric motor noise as the encoder is applying and releasing the internal clutchesIn the transfer case, no fix at this time, Sorry buddy.

emoerman,

I understand your frustration with the noise coming from your vehicle. I see that you have taken it to the dealership. I cannot guarantee anything, but I would like to take a better look at this concern. Can you please private message me your full name, phone number, address, VIN, current mileage, and the involved dealership?

Thank You,

Kristen A.
