2014+ owners having issues with their truck?

Recommended Posts

What you mean they do not have alignment specs?

So when I bought this truck, it had only been on the market for one week. It needed an alignment. The dealership told me that they wouldn't do it for two reason. 1: they would rather wait for the truck to "settle" to see if it fixes the issue. 2: they didn't the "specs" to the the alignment. They said Chevy hadn't sent out the specs for the alignment on the 14's yet.

First off I want to say this is my second post to this forum, lots of great information and knowledge here! A little back story I came from a 2005 Ram 1500 Quad Cab with the 5.7L and auto trans that I traded in with 87000 miles. Never really had problems with that truck, lots of power and really no complaints. Anyway I went back to Chevy after doing some research on the 2014's. I picked up a 2014 1500 Crew Cab with the 5.3L, 3.08's and LT-1 package. I want to start off by saying the ride of this truck is amazing and very quiet, currently it has just over 2000 miles.

I have had some quirky issues that may or may not be related. I have had problems with the backup camera not kicking on while going in reverse and also with the favorites showing up as "currently unavailable" when trying to change the radio stations via the steering wheel control on the back left side of the wheel. These problems go away once the truck is turned off and restarted, however they come back every now and again which I would say is more of an annoyance than anything else.

Another issue I have noticed is a vibration on the highway which could just be a wheel out of balance. Also there is a vibration from a stop and under hard acceleration. To me it feels like the truck is struggling and this could be attributed to the final gear set. In hind sight I wish I would have gotten the 3.42 or 3.73's as the transmission has to downshift when cruising at 45-50mph and the truck is going up even the slightest grade in the road. (I live in southern NJ which is relatively flat). I have found that at those speeds the engine is only turning about 1000-1100 rpm. To correct this gear searching, I found that putting it in tow mode eliminates this behavior and provides enough rpm to push it along just fine.

Recently I took the truck on a road trip to western MD which has some steep hills on the highway. I really noticed just how sluggish it was when compared to my Dodge that I ran out there for the past 4 years. It was only me and my family with our belongings for a 5 day stay so there was not much weight on the truck considering what its "capabilites" are rated at. I use to pull a small 5x8 landscaping trailer and atv out there with my Dodge and never had any issues. I am really glad I opted to leave the atv and trailer at home on this trip because I have a feeling it would have been a nitemare towing a trailer with this truck for a 5+ hour ride. My wife who doesn't know anything about cars says, "Is your truck ok? Its sounds like its struggling." as we were going up an incline while on the highway at 70mph. It seemed like it shifted from 6th to 4th or 3rd gear quite a bit just to hold its speed while on cruise control.

I have already placed a call to GM to have these issues corrected however I am assuming that I am stuck with the gears that are in it, unless I decide to change them out in the future once they become available from the aftermarket. We will see how it goes. 2 days after I bought the truck I contacted the dealer about how I felt the truck was falling on its face when going up even the slightest grade. I told them how I really had to push the accelerator to keep it moving at a steady pace if not it would just continue to lose speed causing people to tailgate me. The dealer told me that the truck needs to learn my driving habits and I found that plausible, however it still does the same thing. My feelings are that GM put the lowest gears possible in this thing to get the max MPG out of it, all the while sacrificing daily drivability. I am now averaging 17.5 mpg on my 7 mile commute to work. To me this isn't great, nor is it worth having such a low final gear and having this thing fall on its face while making said trip to work every day.

If you are considering a 2014, I highly recommend that you stay away from the 3.08 gears and at the very least go with the 3.42, especially if you live in a hilly area or drive the speed limit of 45-50 mph on a daily basis.

Update: I took it to the dealer for several issues. They fixed a steering wheel that was slightly turned to the left at all times when going straight. Off the top of my head I think it was a steering angle sensor adjustment. I was told that 3 of the 4 wheels were out of balance so I figured that fixed the vibration problem. They did not do ecm/tcm updates because my truck was supposedly up to date and not throwing any codes that are "required" before they will install the updates gm released on 10/15. I picked up the truck and drove straight to work never achvieving highway speeds. After work I took it on the highway and the truck feels like it is going to shake itself apart above 75 MPH!

What the hell is going on here GM? I have only made 1 payment on this truck and its starting to become more of a headache than its worth!

BTW, I had a 2014 Yukon rental while my truck was being worked on. It had the 5.3 vortec, the same 6spd trans and the 3.08 final gear set. The way that Yukon shifted and its road manners were very predictable and felt like most other cars / trucks that I have driven. Why can the Yukon with the same final gear / trans and a slightly different motor feel so much different than this freak of a pickup I have? The Yukon felt very responsive, shifted firmly / when it should, and required very little skinny pedal to get it moving. At this point I am extremely unhappy with this truck! I guess I need to waste another day so I can take it back to the dealer.

i just got mine a month ago . before i made it 10 miles i turned around the dealership. it was shaking at 45 to 75 mph.

its since been in 4 times. they balanced tired, changed 20's out with other 20's on another truck!, balanced them, then road force balanced them , then rotated the drive shaft 180 degrees, nothing works, they keep blowing me off. started a claim with GMC over a week ago, still no help, the dealership calls yesterday and says district rep wants to drive it, when, 5 days later on friday after 2 pm, well you know that means they arent going to try anything till the next week. i'm sure all this is just putting me off past the florida lemon law

Yes both of my lower headlights are doing the same thing. The upper headlights seem clear though.

The lower ones are usually the ones that do it the most. The reason being is the top ones have the lights on constantly so it burns off the fog. I feel like I just bought aftermarket headlights and I didn't put the seal on correctly.

had mine a month, 2014 GMC SIERRA CREW CAB 1500.

I got 5 miles away from dealership and noticed the shaking felt all threw it from steering wheel and seat.u can see the center console wobbling.

turned around and went back to dealership.

they balanced the tires for 2 hours and i drove it home FELT THE SAME, STILL SHAKING. 45-75 MPH

NEXT DAY, they took the 20" rims and tires off another one in inventory and put on mine SAME SHAKING

NEXT DAY , they kept it for a week and all they did was balance and road force tires . SAME, STILL SHAKING.

NEXT, TOOK IT TO ANOTHER GMC DEALERSHIP, they had a bulletin that said remove drive shaft, rotate it 180 degrees, SAME SHAKING GOING ON.

i traded in an 07 GMC that DID NOT SHAKE DOWN THE ROAD.

I WISH I HAD IT BACK.

THEY TELL ME KNOW ONE ELSE HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM !! BULL

Yep. Won't run. It's cold out up here (-15) but have been driving Chevy trucks for a long time and never had one not start because of cold. It started and ran fine while I cleared my driveway of snow. Then I parked it back in front of my garage, left it running while I went in to get something. When I came back out it was not running and would not start. I plugged it in and let it sit a while. Tried starting it - it starts and chugs for a few seconds then loses it's spark. Unfortunately, I know two other people who have purchased a 2014 Silverado and they are having similar issues.

So far I have resisted any temptation to trade in my truck for a new one. I certainly can afford it. But what you described here is a good reason to keep my truck. I always take a new car/truck for a long test drive, and if I am serious about buying it, then I like to drive it at least 10 miles. If there is even a hint of vibration that I can feel, I will not buy it. I made a mistake a long time ago buying a new 1985 Ford Mustang GT that had steering wheel vibration in it at 60 MPH and up. I thought it was just wheel balance issue, so I bought the car and they rebalanced the tires and all was good for about 300 miles. Then the nightmare started. The vibration came back, even worse than before. No matter what they did, they could not fix the problem. I just lived with it, drove the car for about a year and sold it back to a Ford dealer with 20k miles on the clock for $ 1,500 less than I paid for it new becuase these cars were in great demand back then. So at least I got most of my money back. But it was a very frustrating and disappointing experience nevertheless. Edited by pm26

I bought 2014 Crew LT and love it!!! 1st new Chevy ever, waited for this truck to come out and have been pleased with it so far. I have heard the ticking in the last cpl weeks, but as I read through here that the sound is normal. I do have a complaint about the MyLink system, I have seen in other 2014 Chevy cars that have text to screen option. MyLink tech said it doesn't come in the Silverado MyLink, also I wish they had an option to buy or ad more apps. The screen shows 3 dots on it like there should be more than 1 screen.
