2014+ owners having issues with their truck?

Recommended Posts

Background:
In mid-October 2013, I purchased a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado LT 4x4 Crew Cab (5.3L engine/ 6 speed Trans./ 3.08 axle ratio) from one the local Miami Area Chevy dealerships. I was initially extremely satisfied with my new vehicle, as in my eyes it was an upgrade from my previous vehicle, a 2007 Chevrolet HHR. However, as I began to drive the truck I noticed a few things.
The primary thing I noticed were very harsh shifts from First to Second gear (while the rest were smooth). I also noticed that when pressure was taken off the accelerator (to slow down without braking) and then reapplied (to accelerate), the truck would violently jerk forward.
Additionally, when I purchased the truck, I noticed that it had the normal "ticking" of direct injection engines, just as my HHR had. However, after a few days the engine developed a separate noise, which was not present when I test drove the vehicle. This new noise can best be described as a knocking sound.
The "Service" Visit:
Extremely concerned and equally shocked by both this knocking noise and the unusual gear shifts, I dropped off the vehicle at the dealership so "they" could investigate the problems. I coordinated this so that the vehicle would be at the dealership while I was out of town, so as to not inconvenience anyone or unnecessarily cause the dealership to incur costs of providing loaner/rental.
In the event I was still out of town when the inquiry/necessary repairs to the vehicle were completed, the dealership was provided with instructions to contact my father so that he could pick it up, or take any necessary action.
After five days and no word, at my prompting, my father contacted the dealership and was told that the investigation into the cause of the problems was complete. He went to the dealership to pickup the vehicle, and was told by Mr. [sERVICE REPRESENTATIVE] that they had "hooked the vehicle up to the computer," and that it did not show anything wrong with the vehicle. The representative was then taken to the vehicle and the knocking noise was specifically pointed out to the service representative and later, in the presence of the rep, to a mechanic specifically. Both dealership employees acknowledged the knocking noise. They then tried to convince my father that the noise was normal of these vehicles by showing him a similar Silverado, and attempting to convince him that it too had what they described as a similar knocking noise. Notably, my vehicle did not have any knocking noise at the time of purchase.
While at the dealership, my father noticed that the service representative was referencing certain computer printouts. When my father asked for them, the representative refused to give them to him. When further prompted, he finally turned over the papers. They included vehicle build information and two bulletins from Chevrolet (# PI1029 7 #PIP5149A). The former involves clunks while up-shifting and firm downshifts; The later involves, in pertinent part, poor shifting transmissions during the 1 & 2 and 2 & 3 shifts.
Indicated on the former (PI1029) was a handwritten note emphasizing the part that stated "built prior to July 3, 2013," Next to which was written "Build date July 30, 2013". (Apparently to the Chevy dealer a later build date automatically eliminates this as the potential culprit).
On the later, (PIP5149A), emphasis was placed on "MUST HAVE EITHER a P0324 and/or EXCESSIVE Spark RETARD. If neither of those two conditions present, this PI does not apply." Also emphasized on the same PI, under Recommendation/ Instructions, were the words "On vehicle built before 8/20/13:" under which it states, "[t]he dealer is authorized to remove the oil pan and inspect the oil squirters for contact." However, nothing elses was noted.
Disturbingly, no service invoice, manifest, diagnostic results, and/or anything similar thereto was provided, evidencing that the truck had been left for service or that any investigation whatsoever had taken place.
I purchased this truck brand new, and paid for it as such at nearly $40,000. When I purchased the vehicle, I expected the quality and workmanship associated with a new vehicle. I expected the good quality and workmanship for which Chevrolet has earned a reputation through their previous products, such as my 2007 HHR. (And which they readily tout as such.) I would not have purchased a car that less than one month after coming off the lot would sound like and drive like, for lack of a better expression, an old jalopy.
Moreover, the thought of Chevrolet dealership service department failing to conduct any investigation into a customer complaint beyond (allegedly) hooking it up to the computer, and even more shockingly failing to provide any invoice, manifest or proof of the investigation/work done is ludicrous.
I hope that all the problems with my Silverado can be resolved rapidly and amicably, as I would love to have the same excellent impression of Chevrolet and Chevrolet products I once had. However, in the event they are not, I will be seeking legal counsel to assist me in the resolution of these matters.
I am going to attempt to take the truck back and pick it up myself later this week/early next and maybe get some explanations or at a minimum something in writing. ----> By this I meant to the Service Dept.

Reference post 429: Pretty inexcusable and totally different from how my dealer has treated me. I also have an early build 2014 and fortunately have no issues with the engine, transmission, or anything else. Still, my dealer was more than happy to apply the ECM/TCM update you referenced that affects AFM operation and potential hard shifts. I had no drivability issues before the update, and none after. 10,000 miles later my engine is still quiet, and in fact I have had zero problems whatsoever. So thanks to my dealer, and shame on yours. Hopefully they will come around with a little help from Jennifer and GM. Good luck and keep us posted.

First off sorry about ths situation and when I say what Im going to say Im not defending GM,saying you do not have a legit gripe, or that I am really even pointing you out.

One thing I have noticed with some complaints is I think some people are failing to take the issues in context. The tranny issue as you speak is inherent of the 6spd they are now using, my F150 did it as well as my new silverado, does it make it right no not necessarily, but thats a characteristic of the design of the tranny same goes with the direct injection ticking noise. So being upset about it kind of like getting mad that a 2.0 megapixel camera phone takes crappy pictures after you knowingly bought it. So after hearing some of the complaints out there I think some people were wowed by something new and shiny and failed to reserach the specs/design of the vehicles and how they actually operate at times. And the components that GM is using is no different then other manufactures or are behaving any different. And sometimes as consumers we are stuck with buying and using what industry wants to give us. I also think sometimes as buyers we buy a 40k truck and we expect it to be flawless, and dont get me wrong I do as well, but creaks and grones have been inherent in vehicles for decades, but we have to remember we are still talking about a mass produced chevy truck here not a bentley.

But like I said Im not defending GM at all and nor do I know your situation or others, but sometimes i get the the feeling of the cant make happy consumer syndrome. And let me tell you I bought a 07 silverado new body style, the whole interior rattled and shaked, there was an interior leak from the door seal that put a puddle of water on the drivers floorboard for 6 months until they could fix it, and regardless of what I did the truck was only able to maintain a 13-14mpg. Went to GM and said look enough truck is a year old with 14 grand on it, replace with a used or new like vehicle and Ill be happy they said nope, went and traded that dud in for a for and owned 2 more Fords, sure they had their issues here and there but nothing like that chevy did, The last F150 I had a 2011 was a great truck and was hands and feet above the 07-13 silverado and despite being 3 models years older than my new 14 silverado still takes the cake in many aspects. But I decided to try chevy again as I wanted 4 doors. But if I have half the issues that my last chevy had, this one will go to the bone yard like the last one and I will not be funding any more of chevys mistakes.

Taking mine in for the first oil change and AFM recall this weekend. But, my seat movement is back. Very frustrating to have this annoying problem come back again. Not to mention I noticed loose trim from the last time they fixed the seat.

Had mine fixed and it was back within a day. Squeaks like crazy!

After again speaking to my father this morning, I feel I need to make a correction to a misstatement/ improper translation in my previous post.

Where I stated that "When my father asked for them, the representative refused to give them to him. When further prompted, he finally turned over the papers." was inaccurate as a result of a miscommunication and or loss in translation while speaking with my father. What actually transpired was that after my father noticed the papers, he asked the service representative what they were, was told that they were the "papers for the truck," and when asked if he could have them, the papers were hesitantly given to him by the representative.

I felt that in the interests of accuracy, fairness, and honesty, I needed to correct this statement.

Additionally, nards444, I do not disagree with your assertion that no car is perfect, and that their are some hypersensitive purchasers who overly nitpick (which for the record, is not at all the case in this circumstance). However were I believe we disagree is that were brand new vehicle manifests a problem which is completely corrigible and is the result of nothing but either the manufacturers by virtue of either poor design, assembly, qnegligence, or whatever the case may be, I feel that it is our job as consumers to " keep the big guys honest" and make them rectify the issue. If we do not, we are merely encouraging manufacture to continue to make either sub-par or malfunctioning products, without any penalty for taking advantage of helpless consumers.

However, I do share your sentiment that their are many things wrong with the auto industry.

Just a thought. Thank you for your commentary.

The microphone in this is designed to work best with your butt in the seat and you looking straight forward out the windshield (driving) and talking in a normal tone and volume speaking voice. If you look up at the microphone and yell at the damn thing you'll just make it worse

The reason I tried talking directly at the mic is that the system doesn't work properly otherwise

I went to the dealership the other day for the seat recall issue. It took me longer to drive to the dealer than they had my truck around back. I asked about the ECM/TCM update for the AFM issue as well. The adviser told me the seat was just an inspection and the AFM update did not apply to my truck. My truck was built at the end of August. I also had the seat popping issue everyone had from earlier and it has either stopped or I just don't notice it any more.

Fair enought and like I said I wasnt necessarily pointing you out. And very good point on consumers demanding fixes and repairs. I just think you like you said you have the guy that just drained his wallet for a 45k truck get upset when a window delays in rolling up one time or there is groan in the front end for 2 miles of driving. Like I said Im not trying to be a GM Fist pumper either, I own a camaro and the first and last truck I had was chevy and it was junk through and through and I spent 5 years in fords without issues and decided to get some GM white meat again. You also have the owners that drive over pot hole, hit things, tow over weight, etc and wonder why there stuff breaks.

So they have no clue what the burning smell is, they think it's normal. Also, Chevy is FALSE ADVERTISING !!! From what I understand there is no lights or connection for lights around the knobs. A GM representative told me they are going to make

Sure they take that illustration off the market!

Take the illustration off the market, what's that going to do for the radio brochure I have with my owner's manual? Maybe GM will ask for it back. Maybe it will become a collectors item (sarcasm). Look at the knobs, notice there is a large gap between the knob and the plastic faceplate. It was designed to have a back light just like the 4wd knob on the left side. What a joke.
