6.2 and 35 inch tires

Recommended Posts

I have read where the 5.3 is a dog with a lift and 35s but my truck is a 6.2 with 3.42 gears and was wondering if I can get some input from you guys with this setup. Im looking at tge 7.5 rcx lift. I mainly am concerned with the tire size with these gears but maybe the 6.2 can make up for it?

It will still be a dog. Not as bad as the other motors but it will still be undergeared and the torque mgmt. doesn't help either. You can do it, but I would regear if the money is there. I'd also get a better lift that's properly designed.

Look at it this way. A Mechanic once told me that vs stock you loose roughly 10% of your power at the wheels per tire size you go up. Idk how true it is its just the info I've been givin

As long as they weren't too heavy probably be fine. Try it first then if its not what you like, re-gear then.

Mostly effect towing most likely. The 5.3/3.42/6spd is a gutless turd with stock tires(towing), the 6.2 is a powerful engine.

Its not going to be off road really, mainly highway driven.

Still a junk lift that rides rough and has terrible front end angles..but what do I know? The gearing issue will be evident on on he highway when passing, hitting any hills or overpasses, and towing. The truck will always be downshifting. I ran on stock gears for a while and it sucked but its doable.

not to hijack this thread but what gears did you end up going with blackout07? i know my stock gears arent cutting it with my 305's and my lil 4.8L. will i need a new carrier for new gears? i dont know much about this section of trucks

I'm running the 6.2 and 3.73 with the max tow package. And it definitely has balls. I'm looking at 4" lift and 33's also because I tow and there will be no offroading unless the zombie apocalypse hits! Ill just run em over! But IMO your really going to have to re-gear to make it what your looking for and add some more HP as your going to need it.

Blackout07 is correct. I am currently running 35" tires on 3.73s and I consistently get 12mpg highway(I drive about 50miles a day, moderate hills). Highway driving is horrible, constantly searching for gears to accelerate or make it up a hill. It is also a dog off the line, I think torque management is mostly to blame for that.

A couple weeks ago I slapped 33s on the back just to do burnouts down in ocean city for hot rod weekend. I didn't feel like changing tires for the drive home so I drove home with the 33s. It was still a dog off the line but my highway MPG shot up to 17 from 12, HUGE difference. I believe that with 35s and 3.73s my trucks RPM sits right underneath the torque band on the highway. I have also noted if I am cruising at 85mph+ (rpm sits higher in the torque band) my instant MPG reading goes up, and it doesn't search for gears going up hill. But unfortunately I live in a the worst place in America to drive, where hybrids think they own the left lane on a 4 lane highway....so I have to regear soon .
