Shocks/Struts for RWD Silverado?

Recommended Posts

So this isn't another 4X4 Silverado looking for a lift, but my RWD Silverado needs new shocks and struts because I'm on the original ones at approximately 208,000 miles. They're actually still in kind of decent shape in general, but the ride over uneven surfaces is horrible and it's very annoying to say the least. I don't want a car like experience, because that would be impossible, but I am looking for a relatively supple ride while maintaining a controlled ride at high speeds and over uneven surfaces. Right now even over the larger lane markers I can feel excessive wheel hop because the shocks/struts aren't doing their job in dampening the vibrations.

As for the use that she receives, it's about 90% normal city driving with passengers, and maybe a few hundred pound loads on the weekends. And there isn't any towing involved, unfortunately!

I have had my eye on the BIlstein 5100 or 4600HD's, but I'm not sure if these are the way to go for a supple/controlled ride in a RWD 1500?

Any suggestions or recommendations are welcome!

P.S. The tires are 265/70/18 Michelin Latitude Tour's, so I am biased towards a comfortable on-road setup.

I've got the monroe reflex's and they seem to work great. Though I think I need to upgrade to a longer shock since I leveled the truck out.

What do you mean by "great", could you please elaborate?

I have the 4600's all around on my leveled 2wd and I like them

Same here, please.

The 4600's give a very firm ride. Throw anything in the bed or add a trailer and it handles perfect

Very firm but still supple and comfortable? Do they take in uneven surfaces well? At the moment almost any unevenness causes the truck to dance and skip uncontrollably.

If your riding on stock height and don't plan to level the truck, then get the reflex's, they smooth out the ride tremendously over worn factory, corning improved alot and dipped less on really sharp turns, bumps do not launch your ride into the air unless maybe you try to jump a rather large bump but the overall performance of it I would say is 9/10 for overall performance. Though one thing I cannot comment on it towing. Only tow my dirt bike and random supplies and such.

Excellent information, thanks!

And I'm at stock height with no plans to level or anything else. With that said, I won't be trying to jump anything either. :driving:
