Rear Differential Change (6.2L)

Recommended Posts

I have a few questions on a fluid change if anyone can help me out.

1) I have 2 quarts of fluid, will that be enough or do I need more?

2) I can't find a drain plug on my rear end, so if I take the cover off is the gasket reusable or do I need a new one? I was told by another member here that they reused theirs, but I wanted to see what others did too.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I don't know what size diff you got but the fluid level is in the manual, I think mine was just below the fill hole. There is a different measurement for each diff I think.

They usually are a paper gasket which is not reusable. I used silicone but the gasket is like 20$ at Napa I believe, I think 2 liters might be enough can't remember.

There is no drain cover removal is only way.

I dug a GMC 2010 manual out of a pile of dust at work.

I use a Allen key to check to level of fluid measurement from the hole.

There is a difference between 1500 and 2500 series

I did this a while back, and posted what I did here: http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/132120-poll-when-do-you-change-your-rear-diff-oil/page-3 . There's a few post's spread out, but I used the GM gasket for ~ $10, and Valvoline Synpower 75W90 (found @ NAPA). No problems, but my opinion is that the factory oil would have lasted "forever". I had a long towing trip that summer (over 5k miles), so I wanted fresh fluids.

Your three quarters of a quart short for your diff... it takes 5.5 pints of fluid. You have the axn code 9.5" 14 bolt being a 6.2 truck. Pull the cover as at least that way you can clean the magnet in there. There should be a drain in the bottom of center section around dead center pointing toward the ground. Look under the pumpkin of the rear end and you should see it. Fill plug is on the passenger side of the center section like the 2500 hd photo.

Loosen or remove the fill plug before removing the rear cover. You'll probably need just a little from a third qt of diff oil.

Ok, so I will be taking the whole cover off to drain the fluid, and clean everything out good. I was going to do this today, but since my local dealer is closing at 12 I don't have enough time to get the GM gasket today, plus I need a bit more fluid. I'm going to try Napa yet, but i don't know if they'll be much help? If not I'll just do this next weekend.

Thanks for clearing everything up for me guys I appreciate the help

don't open the gasket until you got the cover off incase you do have a reusable one. You did say you heard someone say they had a reusable one maybe you might too.

txab is right about a bit of a 3rd liter I remember now

Ok good idea. I keep calling Napa, but no one answers so ill probably end up driving up to see in person. Advance has the Felpro rubber ones, but I've heard not to use them.

I am the one who had the reusable gasket but I have the 8.625" axle. I didn't realize when you asked me that you had the 9.5". I know the gaskets are different. I'm not sure if yours will be reusable or not.

No big deal I just assumed since your gasket was reusable that they all would be, but the more I thought about it the more I figured that I should check for sure since my rear end is different. I called my local dealer today and ordered one. Cost me $10 and change. I'll post the part number up when I get it for future reference.
