What all is needed to regear/ build a rear and front end?

Recommended Posts

As I have stated in a previous topic, I am looking to regear my front and rear end to 4.88's that way I am ready for 37's. Well, now is the time to start looking at all of what I need and how much Im going to be spending. Here is what I have come up with so far:

Posi trac unit

Gears (rear)

Master bearing install kit

Axles

Axle bearings

Axle seals

Fluid

Posi Additive

And for the front:

Gears

Master bearing install kit

Axles

Axle Bearings

Axle seals

fluid

Posi additive

Now, have I forgot anything?

Also, is the front differential from the factory a locker or a posi unit? Any and all advice would be appreciated. Thanks

what the heck is a master bearing install kit ??? lmao

Maybe its called a master overhaul kit. Yes, it is aftermarket, made by Yukon. Comes with both the pinion bearings, both the carrier bearings, shims, cover gasket, gear marking compound, and I think some other stuff.

From the factory, the front axle is an option for locker.... Older Blazers and Trucks were all special ordered for that option. And aswell for the rear.

So do you think I should just go with a locker so it makes it actual 4wd?

It was discussed in another post, yes it was an option in the 70's in blazers and such. It makes it a true 4x4.

The Ram power wagon also had it as well as the ford bronco.s

If you are planning alot of off roading then sure. but for an everyday driver it is not recommended.

Plow trucks, mudders , etc then that would be the way to go. Also The Dodges used a pto off the transfer case for a winch that worked off the engine for real mudders !!

  • 3 months later...

I know I created this post a while ago, but Im starting to purchase stuff for the differentials.

Was wondering if I should just get new axles for the rear and axle stubs for the front?

The front stubs have 81k on them, the rear axles have a little over 120k on them. Not sure if they will hold up with 4.88's and 37's, and wondering if I should replace them while Im in there anyways

Also, the front carrier has 81k on it. Since it just floats there (until engaged), I don't think it would have to replaced, but Id rather replace it now than have to take it back apart later.

Any suggestions would be helpful, thanks
