I guess my paranoia gland is not as large as some folks when it comes to messing with stock stuff. Getting and using Adam's product took me all of 5 minutes after reading about it. And that was before I actually picked up the new truck from the dealer! It got plugged in to the truck the day it arrived, two days after picking up the truck. My 2013 Freightliner, I changed ECM settings before I had even had it 6 months. Now considering the engine in that thing alone cost as much as my brand new Silverado, most folks would think that risking voiding a warranty would be tantamount to insanity. I did the same with my last truck and my 2006 Jeep Liberty Diesel. If you are somewhat stealthy about what you do, and do not broadcast it to the world what you have done, and you are cautious about what it is you are changing, then most often no one will actually sit up and take notice. In the case of my semi's, no one actually looks for anything in the ECM anyway unless there is a problem, and all they are looking for is the fault code. I have been doing the ECM thing since 2005, and have never had an issue. Now, I am not doing ECM mods for the power thing so I can set a new land speed record up Pike's Peak. I am doing these things to correct issues that hinder the engine from "being all it can be".

Skeptical ... ordered anyway.

Installed ... really? That's it?

Tested ... amazing. I've never owned an AFM bridled vehicle and really didn't know what it felt like. Now, I know.

Truck runs smoother and the power is much smoother along the curve. The jerkiness or power on, then the falling flat when rolling down an incline and then the jerk when climbing the next ... gone.

The one thing I hadn't considered and now disappoints me is how quickly the speed limiter now engages. Adam? :ughdance:

It took me all of a drive from town to home out in the country. I knew that this 4 cylinder thing was not going to get along with me. The Range module got put on when I got home. I drove the truck all of 11 miles without it.

I am new to the forum and just purchased a 2013 Silverado 1500 Crew today. I also have been in to commercial trucking for over 30 years. Tuning and tweaking ECM's is something that is a major game regarding semi trucks and engines. I traded in my last semi last August and bought a 2013 Freightliner. Now, we are talking about engines that alone cost as much as most folks' new total cost of their pickup. I had no problem getting into ECM and tweaking some of the EPA settings. Upped my horsepower to 550 and 1850 torque and increased the mpg's by 15%. That being said, I have no problem with ordering up the Range product and plugging it in to my new Silverado's port as soon as it shows up. Not going to lose one minute of sleep in doing so. I would opt for a complete tune if there were a bunch of things I wanted to change, but this device seems to fit right into what I really want at this point in time. And for those of you that complain about cost of such things, a tune on a commercial semi, like the Bully Dog product, reaches into the $3K territory. $200 for the range product is chump change. Sometimes it pays to just step back and take perspective.

Thanks to Adam for getting us the AFM disable device. Man, how I do love the spirit of entrepreneurship in America.

Just what this forum needs, a EPA deviating big rig super trucker wanna be. :driving::lol: .

Congrats on your new truck(s) & know your user id from a trucking forum. This guy knows his stuff & is one of the few that actually makes sense over there. But just so you know Cowpie, this forum is the same in the regard that you need to post photos up of your new ride.

I ordered mine direct from the Range site. I put SILVERS in the discount code section and got $20 off the price. Free shipping and it arrived in about 4 days.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know I need to. Still putting on stuff and getting it where I want. Then I will have all the pics up. Guilty as charged. I like tweaking things that the EPA would not particularly care for. When the EPA starts paying all the bills, then they get to have their way all the time. And since they tend to stumble all over themselves trying to mandate stuff, they tend to leave little gaps in their regulations for those of us that are able to find them. That was the beauty of the big truck I got. Beat them at their own game. I am not quite as dedicated to getting around their stuff on the gasser side of things. This AFM delete stuff is primarily getting around an OEM thing.

But good to see you are out there monitoring me, Brad, and keeping me on track! :D

Rich:

I just emailed you back. Yes, the lights go off. Keep in mind, however, that if you guys store your vehicle for 4-5 days or longer, please remove the device. It does have a small draw on the battery.

Thanks for the kind words guys. If you need anything - give a shout.

Just got it Adam, thanks for replying so fast ;-) Glad to hear the light goes off, kinda figured it did. As for the draw does everyone get it or just a hand full of people? I drive this truck every day so no worries there, but has any one rely nailed down that its this product? I don't see any where that this could be drawing if the light is shutting down, unless its always sending the code to the ecm even when power is lost....... are you drawing from a constant or ignition(on off with key) ?

On a side note, looks like a great product and very cool that you came up with a way to bypass this afm this way...... and again thanks for the quick reply on a sunday man.

Whats the number of days has it been taking to get to Michigan?

Thanks

Richie

  • 2 weeks later...

I am very interested in the Range AFM disable device. I'd love to install this chip for 2 main reasons... first is to end the worry about burning oil with the AFM and all the BS problems that go along with oil consumption. And second and more important in my opinion, is to have a full time V8 like the vehicle was originally intended to be. No more delays in going from V4 to V8, just instant power like my older silverados without AFM used to be. I tow our boat and a trailer here and there and it would be nice to have full power 100% of the time - main reason why you buy a V8. I could care less about MPGs too, its a V8, it uses fuel!!! i didn't buy a foreign POS for fuel economy, I bought an American made family transport/towing machine. This is a family vehicle and I'm not going to put an exhaust or lift on it (maybe someday!). But I'd like to hang onto this vehicle for a LONG time, especially with the heavy price tag that went along with it, so dropping the AFM sounds like the best option in optimizing my odds for this vehicle to last 200k + miles.

I am a little skeptical on installing the chip b/c I purchased the extended bumper to bumper warranty on my '11 suburban and I don't want to risk voiding that warranty. The device has been out for a few months now and I've heard very good things about it, but I haven't heard much about people taking their vehicles in for service after the install... any problems with the dealers/service depts after installing the chip - even if you remove the chip before going into the dealer? Has GM picked up on this chip and found a way to detect it at the dealers? I understand that this chip doesn't leave a footprint on the ECM and it doesn't reprogram it either, it just communicates with the AFM program. Range claims it can't be detected. I'd like to see some cold hard facts and results with owners using the chip having no issues with bringing their vehicles in for service....at the very least before I pick one up. Also, any report on any other issues with this device? No offense to Adam and to Range Tech, I believe in the chip, I just don't want to take a $55K chance with my vehicle and its warranty. Thanks for reading and any replies will be greatly appreciated.
