Disable AFM without Tuning

Recommended Posts

I have been bouncing around the idea of getting one of the Range units. I am leaning more and more toward the V8 mod. My only reservation, is, I am a tight Arse! and the thought of losing any MPG's is sickening to me. However, I am real skeptical regarding the V4 MAX unit and the reviews given are only revealing about 1MPG uptick, at a cost of running in V4 90% of the time and who knows what that will do to your engine long term - scary.

So, anybody got any feedback on the V8 module regarding loss/stable in MPG's? I know Travis said he actually got a 1MPG uptick. If I stayed exactly the same, I would be happy to have the extra power, torque and no annoying bumping in and out of V4.

Anybody got any news on fuel consumption in FT V8?

Thanks.

I received my V8 only Range today. I will be checking my mileage in the coming weeks to check for losses or gains. I am hoping my mileage will at least brearkeven. I too hate the annoying in and out of V4. My normal driving is a mix of small town USA and rural driving, with speeds of 25 mph in the heart of town to 45-50 mph on the rural roads. My normal MPG has been 15.9 hand calculated. I only have one run of 275 miles of actual interstate driving at speeds of 65-70 mph with cruise on running 5 over the posted speed limit in hilly terrian. It yielded 20.2 mpg. I will post what MPG numbers I get.in the coming couple weeks.

I lost .5 MPG when I disabled the AFM with my superchips tuner. I went from 16.8 to 16.3 mixed driving. I would get better if I had different gears and tires though. BFG A/T's and the g80/3.73 rear end doesn't help anything. The .5 MPG is well worth the loss to get a full-time V8.

I got my Range V8 today. I'm looking forward to see the mileage difference with V8 only. I understand that GM has to put AFM on their V8/auto trans motors to meet federal EPA regs but damn is AFM annoying! With a good mix of freeway driving, stop and go traffic and city driving I'm currently getting 15 mpg. I'll report back in a few days to let you all know what's up.

Btw, I ordered my Range V8 on Wednesday 4/10 and received it today, Friday 4/12. Awesome. Also don't forget the GM-TRUCKS coupon code for $15 off. It's still active! ;)

That's close to what I averaged when I had my 5.3 truck with AFM. I got an average of 15.4 with or without it being active, and I want to say that where I drive is similar to you. My current truck averages 14.5 so I didn't loose all that much, and it's way nicer to drive. I also have the 6spd vs the 4spd in my other truck, so I'm sure that helps too.

I've got the Range V8 yesterday.

After the first "test run" to the grocery store I can say: it is worth it.

Such a smooth ride.

My truck did not vibrate or shutter badly when switching between V4 and V8. Just a little. So I thought.

But now since it is gone I can feel the (big) difference.

@Range...good one!

+1 - I would always get that shudder when switching too. The truck is like night and day as far as drivability is concerned. No more waiting for V8 mode when trying to accelerate. It works just as advertised.

I'm still waiting to complete this first tank of fuel before I report any MPG numbers. Late this week I would say.

How long is this "coupon deal" good until??? :tumbleweed:

I never saw an expiration date on the code. I think I saw it in a post from Jan 2013 and I just used it last week so I would say there isn't an expiration.

Alright, so after a full tank using the V8 Range, my mileage dropped from 15.0 to 14.6. And yes, for all the 'I calculate my own mileage cuz GM computers SUUUUUCK' guys, I used the DIC. To be honest, I really don't care about the mileage drop. The improvement in drivability and not having to wait for the switch from V4 to V8 is what I really wanted. Besides, not to dredge up this old argument, I didn't buy my truck for the fuel efficiency. The V8 Range works as advertised and it's a huge thumbs up from me.

A while back there was some talk about combining the V4 MAX and the V8 lock into one unit. Has anything developed on this front? Also, if you order any Range device from an alternative source than Range directly; how is the 30 day guarantee handled should you choose to return the device? Or is that policy only available if you order direct from Range?

I still think the V8 unit is my ticket; just listening and waiting on more feedback.

Thanks, Gadwall.

There are a few threads on their device but in one of them they reported that a multi-function unit is not feasible.

Well after 2 tanks of gas thru my truck with the V8 Range. The first tank yielded 16.3 mpg the second 16.4 mpg. Before the Range my truck had averaged 15.9 mpg normal day to day driving. All hand calculated. I really like that the V4 hesitation is gone. There is a slight hill before I get to my house that before my truck would be in V4 it would finally go back to V8 then a few seconds later down shift to 5th gear. Now it will hold 6th gear all the way. The truck now drives the way it should have to begin with. Thank U Range for a great addition to my truck.

Sorry for the delay in addressing some of these questions. I'll be on here daily from now on...

The guarantee is for 90 days wherever you buy. No problem.

Great to hear the fuel economy stuff. We had a hunch that in certain driving situations, it would be better. Please don't be shy about asking questions. So far - everyone seems to love the AFM disable device.
