Driving jobs

Trucking is a disease, it gets in your blood. Back when I was driving, after being out for a month, all I would want to do is go home, and get as far away from the truck as I could. Within 2 days, I was itching to get back out there. It's the white line fever, it calls you. I still have days where I am tempted to go back, but I enjoy having a family life now more than being gone.

I can totally identify with this. I don't drive trucks but I travel almost weekly for my job and once that sort of thing gets in your blood, it's hard to let go. I went from being out of the northeast once when I took that job to now having visited 40 states, 6 Canadian provinces and even a trip to Saudi Arabia. Being on the road wears you out but especially before moving to MI when I'd be in office when not traveling (I work from home out here) I'd be going about insane if I spent more than a few days at a time in front of my desk.

You will probably speak with a recruiter, which means believe less than 50% of what you are told.

However, you can read all about them specifically at the link or look around at any other of the major class 8 otr companies on the same site.

Thanks for the link! I start CDL school next week and have been researching companies to work for after I graduate.

Hi Sarah,

As I mention earlier, I start CDL training next week. I chose weekend classes, so I can continue working during the week and pay my bills. Out of pocket, it cost me $395.00. I received a low interest Federal Student Loan and a Pell Grant to help pay off the balance of school when I finish. Go to fafsa.gov for more information, as long as the school you choose is accredited you should qualify based on what you are currently earning. Any accredited school should have a Financial Aid Office and will help you through this process.

My school provides assistance with job placement after graduation. I started my job search already and found a lot of opportunities for new drivers. I have book marked the web-sites for future reference. Be careful though, there are a lot of good and bad companies out there. Look for “Top Pay Certified Carriers”. Do a job search in your area, visit the trucking company’s web-site and check out the blogs.

Good luck!

  • 9 months later...

I'm looking into doing straight truck driving or some sort of delivery in state to start. I've always wanted to drive truck for the fact I love driving and I'd rather spend my day on the road rather than dealing with people in my shop/destroying my hands... So I'm asking how do you start out and what all do I need to do? Keep in mind I'm not doing long haul, I know some places pay for Cdl and training but not sure where to start and what to expect as starting pay/hours.

Attend your chosen truck-driving school. A typical truck-driving program lasts about one month. You can receive both classroom and hands-on driving and skills training at a certified school. Actual practice in driving, safety checks and other CDL test areas will prepare you for the state CDL skills and driving portions of the test. Use the classroom time to ask any questions you have about the materials in your state CDL manual or study guide.

You sure you want to be a truck driver? Pay is just above unskilled labor as you will be competing with "undocumented guest workers" for jobs. Way too many higher paying opportunities out there that the "undocumented guest workers" can't qualify for.

I applaud your restraint on that one
