AC Delco PF48 to PF63

Recommended Posts

i've had no issues running the longer filters on my fbodies - and they do hang below the pan.

You are damn lucky to have gotten away with that......so far.

What has the dealership service department said? Anyone call them to inquire. When i worked at Chevy parts the different number was for a longer filter only. so it was no big deal then should not be a big deal now. I will check at my local place and find out what they say.

The service department manager (at the GMC dealership) told me that using the AC Delco PF63 (2013 Yukon Denali) will not void the warranty (in case of engine failure (very remote)), however I use the PF48 because I can buy them new @ Walmart for $3.48 per unit (they do not carry the PF63). Using a non AC Delco oil filter WILL void the warranty in case of engine failure, if the dealer can trace it back to the filter (very remote chance), however I do not trust dealerships, and feel that they would use any excuse to get out of fixing a problem. I believe my 64 Chevelle Super Sport had one of those toilet paper filters when I got it back in the mid 70's. Maybe someone changed the engine and put that in I don't know. We put on that adapter so we could use the modern spin on filters.

I used a longer filter on my 83 GMC S-15 2.8 V6 and had no problem. I don't change my oil anymore, I let the dealer do it so I don't really care now what they do if it works fine with what they are using.

I have always ran the longer version of any filter on my vehicles. As long as it has the anti drain back valve you will be good. The extra filter media will also help with filteration in the oil as well.

I will be using the PF63 on my AT when I change the oil in the coming months.

some of the tin foil comments in this thread though are priceless, GM voiding a warranty because you didnt use the PF48 filter is nothing but crap. As long as you use a filter that meets the GM specs (not the filter part #, the actual specs for filtration) then your warranty will be fine.

Not tin foil, just never asked the dealer, so I didn't know if it would void it, I said potentially it could, I wouldnt bother asking, because running that filter is a just a waste. But, people do what they are going to do.

If it wasn't I'd run one myself.

You are gaining a monster filtration advantage with that extra less than 3/4"

of length

That extra |<-----3/4"----->| makes it a little easier to get a filter wrench on, and does provide some extra filtration. It makes no difference to me whether someone else wants to use the smaller filter; but I figure every little bit helps.

#PIP4889: Engine Break In Oil Filter Number PF48 From New Delivery - Not The Same As The Service Number PF63 In Owners Manual - (Mar 8, 2011)

Subject: Engine Break In Oil Filter number PF48 From New Delivery - Not The Same As The Service number PF63 In Owners Manual

Models: 2011 Buick LaCrosse

2011 Buick Enclave

2011 Chevrolet Traverse, Equinox

2011 GMC Acadia, Terrain

Only with engine RPO Codes LF1, LFW, and LLT 3.6L

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Some customers may comment that the oil filter # the engine came from the factory with is not the same # required for service per the owners manual and gm parts catalog. Engine was delivered with AC Delco PF48 and Service Oil Filter is AC Delco PF63

Recommendation/Instructions:

The PF63 filter has the same high quality attributes as the PF48 with but is 22mm longer which will provide an additional 22 mm of media filtration material. There will also be additional filtration protection during high mileage oil change intervals. The PF63 filter is a NEW release for the 2011 model year. These 2011 engines will be built with a break in oil filter of PF48 with service replacement being PF63.

The PF63 filter can be used on all M/Y vehicles with RPO codes LLT, LF1 and LFW engines if PF48 is the service filter.

Hmmm sounds like it makes a difference according to what I quoted above. I love how everyone gets all fired up if someone goes against GM's engineer's. Comical. If they knew everything then GM would be perfect but their not.

Y'all got me confused. I have been using the PF61.

Talking about filters 2007 NBS trucks on up to 2014. From your signature it would appear it does not pertain to your vehicles.

Fyi - PF63 = AMSOIL EAO18 = Wix 57045
