Slide in Truck Camper

Recommended Posts

I was looking around the net about Truck Campers, and it referanced looking in the glove compartment to see what each truck weight limitations were from the factory. In my truck the sticker states a Slide in Truck Camper was not recommended, no weight was given. I was totally shocked, and was wondering why? My Truck is a 2006, 2500HD, 6.0L Gasser,4L80E, extcab, with the 6.5ft bed and 2wd (with G80). When it was brand new I got it weighed and it was right around 5700-5800 pds, so I had figured I had around 3000 to 3500pds of payload. Granted I have put a full load or river rock, pea gravel, dirt etc in it, and it handled it like it was not even there. I have also towed up to 8000-9000 lbs and the truck never missed a beat. I was just wondering why it had not recommended for a truck camper vs. a weight like on other 2500HD trucks. Anybody have a guess??

Hmmm.....that is strange.

The truck in my sig has the same sticker stating a camper payload of 2040 lbs. My camper when fully loaded is around a ton and the truck handles it like a dream. By the way, my total payload is a little over 3000 also. The difference of a 1000 lbs must be the 5 seat seatbelts = 1000 lbs of people plus the camper payload.

Myself, I'd put a lighter camper in there and not look back.

Agreed, the Livin Lite would also be my choice for hard side....light and no wood rot problems.

I like my camping in the wild, off road and away from campgrounds. My choice was a http://www.fourwheel....com/index.html

All aluminum, even lighter, and built for off road use.

I'll research your payload issue a little further.

It likely has to do with the short bed. FWIW My previous truck was a 2000, 2500 eclb 4x4 with the 6.0.

I don't know what the glove box sticker said, probably @2000#. I have a Lance 920 slide in. The truck weight with camper loaded for 2 weeks including water, two people in the truck and full of gas was 9810#.

This was with a GVWR of 8600#. I added air bags and Rancho shocks. Did this for nine years without problem. The weight was balanced very well frt to rear. Did this with the oem 245 tires.

Upon further research this is the best I can come up with:

"Not recommended" in legalese isn't the same as "don't do it". It's more like "no comment".

Yep, it says that in the glovebox of my daughter's 1994 Silverado 1500 ECSB. I figured it was to reduce liability with the shortbox. She was interested in an 8.5' SS camper that would have worked well but now she has decided not to... I would have done it myself, but she was afraid of some problem. I told her, no warranty left, it should handle it fine. It already has heavier leaf springs and Timbrens.
