That depends . I driven my truck in a foot of snow perfectly fine dont know if i would want any more snow . I think just leave it on auto 4x4 and if you dont have auto just turn it on when you are going to get stuck. It mainly depends on your tires if you need 4x4 or not. Even in canada people rarely use there 4x4 the roads are good enough. I think 4x4 is good for steeper hills but for the most part your not going to need it much.

I have been in my dads old f250 with chains all around in 4x4 and it was pushing snow over the hood. I dont think the newer trucks can do that now stock . There ground clearance is crap . Whats nice about 4x4 trucks is that they sit higher and have the low range gears, and if you need the 4x4 (rare) its there to help out.

I always stay in 2 unless I need 4, or if I'm at a intersection that is very slippery I'll throw it in 4 so I'm not spinning everywhere.

Now if we are out playing around in the snow I'll judge it by what we are looking at going through. Sometimes you just know you'll need 4x4. :driving:

I dont like the auto, you can lose rhe sence for how good or bad the road may be. For my its 2wd till it starts to be a pain to start moving from a stop then its time for 4x4. If you run auto it can be icy or something and you dont notice till u try to stop

This^^ I haven't seen any drifts over 2 ft here in the last 2 years.

This pic was from 2010 in February up here. This storm shut us down for 2 days, 24+ inches of snow with 40 MPH winds. Took me almost 2 hours to plow my drive with the JD 4040 with a plow on the 3 point hitch.

Wish I would have taken another pic driving the tractor over to mom and dad's to do their drive. The walls of snow on each side of the road after they plowed were almost eye level with me in the cab. It was AWESOME!
