No 4x4 traction in 4 inches of snow??

I've had the G80 locker in my last 2 trucks. In most cases it is helpful but there are times where it can be a little hairy. I have had mine lock while turning a corner in the snow and almost immediatly there is 21' of truck sideways in the road!

That's the reason why they invented the stability control...lol.

well, to comment on shaners post, I had a thread about posi for the 1st time ever.. My truck would always just spin the pass rear tire " 1 wheel drive"

And one day it fried both..sending 21'/6600lbs sideways in a hurry! So im adding the locker, regardless of conditions or the trucks mood.

I don't know if the OP is driving on ice, hard packed snow, or just soft snow, but aggressive tires don't do jack for ice or hard packed snow. Only real winter tires or chains solve that problem. It's easy to bury your ass with crappy winter tires and a rear locker. If given a choice, I'd go better tires first.

or just drive smoother. It wont lock in above 50 km , I dont have stability control and I have a G80 if you think your going to slip on a corner just let off the gas. The only time it locks for me on a corner is solid ice like after a warm chinook and all the snow turns into ice sometimes. Going around right angle corners just put it in second less TQ and slowly and smoothly go around the corner once you have enough momentum left off the gas get pointed strait and then slowly smoothly start giving it more power. In icey conditions the gas peddel is a egg under 50 km . and above 50 km it wont lock and your mostly going in a straight line . About a month ago it was freezing rain and a 110 km high way turned into a 20 to 45 km highway that is how slippery things were. There was like 200 accidents that day and those guys where all awd or 4x4 younger guys not looking at the weather ahead of time and where going to fast to get to work . I have never had a problem with my g80 besides wishing it would engage sometimes faster .

Thanks.... I just checked and it appears that 4 new tires cost as much as a locking differential would have. ($1200)

So now I'm thinking that maybe I'll just go with two new rear tires.... It sure is painful when my truck only has 12k miles on it.

Thanks for eveyone's comments.

What tires do you currently have??? Even a decent all season should do alright on a 4wd rig?

Another thing to think about is lowering the tire pressure if you're not hauling/towing, if you haven't already...I have 55psi in all four corners (but its not a duramax). If you're running near to the max pressure in all four, your defeating yourself as the tires will be rock hard and will only make ground contact in the very center. The dealer can drop your TPMS trip pressure to 50 psi to prevent the tire pressure warning light from illuminating at lower pressures.

Arghhh... don't get me started on the TPMS... My truck DOESN'T have it. I was so mad when I realized it (a week after I brought the truck home)... The dealer agreed to swap me straight across for a 3/4 ton that DID have it... But I finally said "No" and stayed with my 3500 Duramax.

Original tires as delivered:

Goodyear Wrangler SR-A

M+S LT265/70R18

I had TPMS on my 2008 Avalanche and it seemed useful. Whenever I was towing my car hauler trailer, I only had to check 4 tires, not 8. (Only the 4 on the trailer) :-)

And, I have TPMS on my 2008 Corvette and it definitely lets me know when the tire pressure is down. Invariably I'll have ONE tire that is 2 or 3 pounds below the others. And the readings always match my multi-pressure gauges that I use. I always know exactly which tire to fill and watch closely.

Finally, when I drive the Vette in winter, I watch the tire pressure on my dash... at home they'll be about 29 pounds... and a mile or two away they are at 30... Then on the freeway, they get up to 31 or 32. So it's been a good education to actually watch the tires "warm up".

When I drove at the race track two years ago... They started at 32 psi and got to 36 after I had gone 120+ for 25 laps.... so it made a believer out of me, as to how much the pressure increased during high speed driving.

You have an 11.5.. Unless they changed something. A 6.0 hd with a 4 speed auto has a 9.25 or a 10.5

The D-max and 8.1 trucks W/allison are 11.5 ring gear.

If you give a guy in the service dept of the dealer your vin he should be able to pull up your build sheet, And you,ll know exactly what you got.
