New Job

Well it's official, I'm leaving my job for one that pays more and doesn't require travel. The issue I'm having is whether or not I should give them 2 weeks notice. The only reason I'm thinking not to is that I'm leaving to one of our major competitors and they might show me to the door when they find out. I can't afford to take 2 weeks off and the other company can't start me sooner. What would you do?

At the GE plant that I work for if you disclose that you are taking a job for the competitor then they show you the door. If you refuse to disclose where you are going then they also show you the door. I have heard that in some cases there is severance pay though...

While it would be a little bit of "work", if they show you the door when you give 2 weeks notice, I do believe you will be able to collect unemployment since "you were/are able & willing to work" and "were not refusing work"!

But I am sure that would be less money, and it is hard to say how long that may take to collect.

Congrats, and good luck!

Chris

Also make sure that there isn't a chance the new job could fall through. Last thing you would want is to be without a job at all!

The job starts October 15th. I'm pretty sure that I'm going to give them a week but tell them I'm going somewhere else that isn't a competitor. I'm going to try and not tell them but if I don't tell them they will probably show me the door anyways. I'm out of vacation time that is "earned" for the year so far so that's out of the question.

Don't burn any bridges; give them a proper 2 weeks notice.

I agree. But don't you think by leaving to a competitor kind of burns the bridge anyways?

You would think it would...
