Taxes on gas here is like 10-20 cents per gallon. I dont remember the exact. its printed on the pumps

That's just the local tax. Total state tax including local, is about .41 cents per gallon. Federal tax is .18-.19 cents per gallon. So about .60 cents of every gallon goes to a Govt. entity. The .41 cents figure may actually be a bit higher

Conspiracy theory time. This did happen before a presidential election, right? In a facility owned by a large oil corporation. What better way to beat the incumbent than to cause the price of a necessary commodity to spike in an already unsteady economy. Makes me wanna grab my balls and think.....

I think the profit margin is a little higher than 4% .

Copied from ABC news website.

"Chevron and Total wrapped up a string of gargantuan, record-breaking earnings reports from oil companies on Friday, a stretch in which six of the major international oil companies topped $50 billion in combined profit for the first time.

Revenue rose significantly to $82.9 billion from $56.1 billion a year ago."

Thats an average of over 8 billion dollars per company for the second quarter this year.

.

gas companies make 1-2 cents profit per gallon of gas sold. all their profit comes from the convenience stores.

and dont forget state and federal taxes. in connecticut there are two different state taxes- one flat and one variable- as the price per barrel of oil goes up the tax also goes up. at least 50 cents a gallon is directly from taxes.

why does everyone thing that oil companies only make profits from the gas you put in your car?

oil is in everything, from tires to plastics, to ink to pesticides:

here is a partial list of Petroleum based products.

Oil companies make profits from the sale of oil not gas
