Anybody work in HVAC, need some help

Does anybody work in the HVAC business on here? I need to check if you can still get the same model evap coil that is in our house.

To make a long story short, we have a leak in the evap coil in our attic unit. Since we have a home warranty from when we purchased our house, they are replacing it. But, we think that the contractor that they are going through is trying to screw us over with making us pay for some things that are not covered by the warranty company that we feel we shouldn't have to pay for. We think he knows they won't cover some things so he put them in his write-up and was very specific so the warranty company would see that and not cover them.

If I give you the model number, can somebody here check to see if it is still available or if there is a new direct replacement available? It has to be the same brand at least.

It is a Carrier and the model number is CD5BXA042000AAA.

Thanks guys!

A call to a local HVAC supply house will answer your question. They can look it up. Depending on the age of the unit, there may be a better, upgraded coil. How old id the unit? What other charges is adding on that you don't believe are appropriate?

The service contractor has dealt with this warranty company and knows how they like the bills to be organized

Unfortunately the unit is 16 years old. He says that he is needing to do some duct modifications to the unit and ducting when he installs it but if he is replacing it with the same (or upgraded) unit, there should be no modifcations needed.

He knows that the warranty company doesn't cover modifications so he put that in his report knowing that they won't cover it and we'll have to pay him the $575 out of pocket for all of the modifications. At least that's what we think he's trying to do.

This is the second contractor the warranty company has sent out and both seem to be a little shady.

It's not uncommon to have to make modifications to fit a new coil. 16 year old coils are of different design. The new coil should be more efficient and have better airflow. Perhaps the original installation was poorly done, not uncommon to happen. If the modifications make your unit better, more efficient that is a good thing. If you are so concerned call your own HVAC guy out, have him give an estimate.

Warranties are usually a PIA and generally worthless

I had a Carrier unit that was also 16 yrs old when it was time to replace, a good friend of mine does HVAC and he put a new system in the house he also had to do modifications to the duct work.

As txab said unit designs change all the time such as height, width and such which will require mods to the duct system.

I do this for a living, the only two issues you have is that yrs ago 5-7 10 seer was the standdard, now 13 seer is the standard and the only way to mmix them together is if the coil is bigger then the outdoor unit...Which would be your case..

The other thing is..they dont make r-22 equipment anymore, Its 410-a now..and you dont want to mix the two!!

hopefully you can find a coil and txv good for a r-22 unit..

Call me if you need 570-656-2466

At 16yrs old its probably an 8-9 seer..Honestly i would start fresh the new 13-14 seer equipment will pay for itself in no time...

Get a new matching system= indoor,outdoor,lineset.
