Driveshaft problem

Recommended Posts

This morning before I came to work I got under to look better.   The driveshaft from the engine to the front of the carrier bearing is fine ,no movement at all.   The second driveshaft at the axle is fine as well, the only movement is at the back end of that carrier bearing.

So either that carrier bearing is the problem.  Could this be that I just need to add grease to that area of the driveshaft?

How can I tell if the carrier bearing is bad, or just the universal joint on the back side of the bearing is bad? If I cant fix by adding grease to that bearing/u joint.

Is that hard to replace, i looked at my haynes manual and it said you have to remove the whole driveshaft.  is that true if it just that carrier bearing or that u joint?

Second is this safe to drive on till I get it fixed? there is alot of movement, but you can only tell when you going very slow up to 15mph.   over that nothing is heard or shakes!

I just found out that all the universal joints are okay.  That center carrier bearing is what is bad,  you can move that back and forth.   how can you fix this thing?  my haynes has nothing about it???

There is a shake/vibration at low miles up to 30 mph.  and a metal on metal sound.   Did some searchin on this sight, and I found the Center support bearing(carrier bearing) was making that sounds.    On the coupling shalf behind the carrier bearing there is a zerk.  Not sure if i grease that if it will fix problem or not,(not sure where the grease will go).   But you can move the driveshaft in all directions at that bearing, and again not sure if it's the bearing or that rubber support?
