trailer brake oem part question

Recommended Posts

I have a 2010 Silverado 1500 LS that did not come with the trailer brake package. I have the wire harness under the dash and all that. So I know I can install an aftermarket controller.

My question is, if I order a new "knee bolster with w/trailer brake" (basically the chunk under the steering wheel with the factory controller) from Chevy, would it work? and would it display the status on my gauge cluster? As it does on the trucks with the factory installed controller?

Has anyone does this? I think it would look cleaner with the oem controller, than an aftermarket part attached some place under the dash.

Thanks,

Drew

Going to have to ge an aftermarket unit. Can't be converted for the OEM one.

If hes got the harness could the truck be reprogrammed to use the OEM unit? :dunno:

No. The harness the OP speaks of is just the bare wires an aftermarket unit plugs into. The OEM one has a different connection and the main wire harness for trucks with it is different.

I had a customer that purchased the OEM brake controller knee bolster and then mounted their aftermarket brake controller through the hole on the bolster, it looked kinda cool. Definetely made it easier to access while driving and kept it from getting knocked around while driving. Took a little custom fab to make it work but looked cool enough that I thought about doing it to mine.

My brother-in-law looked into this for his 2500 and found out it would cost over $1000 if I remember correctly. Someone had done the research already and found that you need a lot of parts because the trailer brake controller is tied into so many parts of the car. You can't just buy the dash piece and have it connected by a dealer.

I like that idea, would love to see pics of that if you'd by chance see the guy again and get the opportunity to snap a couple.
