Thinking about selling, am I crazy?

I beg to differ, you could buy a truck from the 70's that was taken care of it would last just as long. It's all in proportion, you get what you pay for. The new engines do have a little more oomph, however I think it's 6 speed tranny that makes it a little quicker. My 06 with the 4l80 and a tuned 6.0 still keep up and eventually pass a brand new 2500hd 6.0.....they can't be that much quicker...

agreed, my 2001 silvy with a 5.3 will stay even with a GMT900 5.3 stock

Ive thought about it as well. I had a 94 Silverado that was tough as nails, not nearly as fast as my current truck, but it would hold its own. Ive thought about getting an 04 2500HD and then getting a Camaro or something. It's a tough choice, but one thing I'm starting to realize is, is that life is short, get what you want and what makes you happy.

  • 3 weeks later...

I have had feelings like that in the past towards vehicles I have had. Then once in a great while I actually get to drive one and the reality sets in. No room for family, no power, no brakes, no airbags, no locker, in some cases no fuel injection, no H.I.D. headlights, no A/C, no cruise, no power folding heated mirrors...etc...etc...etc.

They are fond memories and I have loved them all, some more than others, but for a daily driver and worker I sure as heck aren't going back.

Compared to my mom and brothers 350s which one is a 96 the other a 97 silverados my truck is like a racecar on the throttle where there's take a second and both are well taken care of

What it comes down to is you can pay the bank or pay for parts (hint: parts are usually cheaper). Yeah, they're tough trucks. My 1990 was a reliable truck for me for 4 years. It had been mudded, towed, and bashed on gravel its entire life. There's stuff you'll have to work on, but if you're the kind of person that doesn't miss a few creature comforts, and you don't mind driving an "old truck", they're great. Not a lot of power, but that can be fixed. Not that great of brakes, but you can fix that, and even though they might not be the best they'll stop the truck. IMO find a high mileage highway truck with a good body and replace engine, tranny, and other components. I think you're on to something.

IMO you've got the best of both worlds owning an '06. The GMT800 platform seems to be the best compromise between the GMT400 rugged durability and GMT900 power and creature comforts. People can say what they want, but there's nothing better about an '88-'02 truck when compared to an '03-'07 classic (except the light under the hood :P). The fit and finish of the newer generation trucks seems rather cheap to me. I'll hold onto my '03 until it's a pile of dust!

ill have my 06 for a long long time i believe

I'll hang on to my 06 till its finished, I can't believe my truck looks as good as it does still. It blows my mind, if youve seen the crap I've put my pickup thru it would surprise anybody LOL. The newer trucks are nice, but they lost the "truck" feeling IMO. Maybe it's just me...but I will forever love the feelin I've driving something a little older.post-65833-133939659652_thumb.jpg

I love rugged old trucks, before I got this I wanted a sports car like monte carlo or pontiac gtp but I also wanted a truck, my sierra drives like a sports car yet its a truck I'm very happy with it

Yea I do miss the underhood light lol. After looking at all the pros and cons I've decided to jus keep my 06. I like the increased comforts it offers, and i really do like the 5.3 better than the 5.7. The only downside is that it is a reg cab but I guess I'll jus deal with it. Besides, in a year it'll be paid off and I can tell the bank to kiss it lol. If anyone really needs a diff vehicle it's my wife. She has a 99 BMW with 150k. The cup holders are broken, as are the power seats. Leaks oil and power steering fluid. I'll never buy a BMW. All that stands for is Big Money Waster. Heck a brake job on that stupid thing cost $900.
