Thinking about selling, am I crazy?

I hope this in the right place. Anyway, I've been thinking about selling my 06, and replacing it with...... a 98 model extended cab. Now hear me out. I had a 98 RC in high school and college, got it with 74k and like an idiot, traded it when it hit 200k. It didn't get great mileag but with 285 buckshots that thing would go anywhere as long as the wheels were touching the ground. And tough as crap, always started and I beat the snot out of it. To say the least I miss it and regret trading it. Now my 06 just doesn't feel as tough as that 98, never has. So I'm thinking bout getting another 98. But only if I can find a really clean 98 ext cab with manual t-case, 3.73 gears, and 5.7. Could be auto or 5 speed, but would have to have 100k or less miles. I just recently got married so my RC is kinda tight now when she packs for a trip lol. It's also got 150k on it, and I still have another year to pay on it. It would be nice to not have a payment either. So what do y'all think? Am I on to something? Or just on something to actually be wanting and older truck? Any and all input is welcome. Thanks in advance.

You just got married, so if you're gonna do anything, go newer. You know, for the reliability and dependability the wife (and someday, kids?) need. You can relive the past later (which, BTW, never quite worked out for me any time I tried it).

Well my first thought was to go newer. But I hate payments with a passion. I can't stand payin 5 yrs on something, I usually want something new after 4 yrs. I might look and see what I can find tho. But I hate the electronics all the newer trucks have. And the words torque management make me sick lol.

I could look for an 02, I had an 02 ext cab for about 6 weeks between the 98 and my current truck. An oak tree fell on it and totaled it. I cannot for the life of me figure out why I went back to a RC. Maybe an 02 with a black bear tune to bring it alive?

I just sold my 98 K1500 Ext Cab LB with 50K on it. Compared to my 2011, the 98 was - underpowered, terrible brakes that could not be improved (reasonably), poor handling (better after I added rear sway bar), marginal ride (had to dump the Bilstein shocks to even be able to stand it), Steering feel was bad (added a steering stabilizer to improve) and 5 MPG less gas mileage. It did have an underhood light and cigar lighter that I had to add back to the 2011 due to decontenting. Don't get me wrong, I didn't hate the 98 but frankly the brakes on those were dangerous.

Om so there are NO 98 model trucks for sale around here. And the one 2000 model I did fin was loaded, but had 160k and was nowhere near as good of shape as mine. But for $7500 I didn't expect much. Did find an 06 for $17000 but it had virtually no options and only had the 4.8. I guess I'll just pay mine off and buy my wife a newer car. I tried anyway. I guess a decent truck for around 10k was a pipe dream anyway.

Yea some of these prices anymore for a vehicle with over 100K miles are ridiculous. I just bought a 98 Grand Prix GT for $2000, and I had a hard time finding that, and It even needed some minor work done to it.

Too bad my home town there is a 98 ext cab 4x4 MINT leather everything, leveling kit with new 33's. No rust body is awesome with 135xxx kms for $3500 LOL. It's really good shape brown color. I was thinking about gettin it for hunting/fishing truck so I stop punishing mine.

And I don't think ur crazy. 96-98 GM pickups were some of the best made. Along with 03-06 IMO, new 3/4 tons with duramax are pretty good too. But I used to have a 97, unreal truck...they don't make em that tough anymore.

nothing was as tough the the GMT400's. they dont have the best ride, handling, performance, but they were great trucks even when the first GMT800 came out in 88.

hard to find ones with under 100k, and if you do, it will be overpriced

I don't think going older is a good idea. From going from a 2001 Silverado w/ 5.3L to the 2010 5.3L, the 2001 felt like it had an anchor tied to the bumper when pressing the throttle. The newer engines are stronger IMO, even with that gay torque management.

Buying older there is a very good possibility that it will cost you a lot of money in repairs, going new you will be protected wit ha warranty if something were to happen. Payments are not fun but piece of mind having a dependable vehicle is worth it. I say go new and don't look back.

I beg to differ, you could buy a truck from the 70's that was taken care of it would last just as long. It's all in proportion, you get what you pay for. The new engines do have a little more oomph, however I think it's 6 speed tranny that makes it a little quicker. My 06 with the 4l80 and a tuned 6.0 still keep up and eventually pass a brand new 2500hd 6.0.....they can't be that much quicker...

Idk about buying a brand new one. A new 1500 z71 would prolly set me back 40k if I got it like I wanted it, which would be an extended or crew cab pretty much loaded. I'll prolly never buy a brand new truck. Oh well. Jus how much does torque management affect the 06 trucks anyway? It seems to get worse the newer you go so I'm curious just how much mine is affected.
