Stock air intake mods

Best air filter test/debate on the internet. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=117009

K&N flows more air...Too much air for our uses ! Filters almost the worst! And holds less dirt.

Factory style filters the best and flows enough air for a turbo diesel. So unless your boosting I doubt need more air flow from a filter.

The End.

The problem with k&n type filters is that once the oil is soaked up by excessive dirt, they allow previously trapped particles to pass thru. A cotton or foam filter will not filter very well at all without a good coat of oil. If the oil gets wicked away by excessive dirt and dust particles, the only thing preventing dust from getting thru is the particles that have previously been trapped by the oil. If the vehicle continues to run in this condition the intake vacuum will begin to pull the previously trapped particles thru the filter because the binding agent of oil has been depleted. K&N makes a top notch product in thier category, but paper filters do filter better because they rely soley on the openings in the paper that the air passes thru to filter out impurities. The level of filtration of a paper filter does not change based on how dirty or clean it is.

I ran a K&N in my truck for a while until I gave up on trying to keep the filter oil off of the MAF sensor. No matter how carefull you are with the amount of oil you put on the filter, it is just a matter of time until the MAF sensor has a coat of oil on it. I reinstalled the original paper filter and to be quite honest, there is no noticeable difference in power. My truck rarely sees extremely dusty conditions so I was willing to run the K&N on it, but I would never run a K&N on my atv because it is used in more extreme environments.

I ran an AirRAID CAI ( with the oil filter) in my 08 5.3l, and to be totally honest, wouldn't do it again. It sounded a little cooler, and maybe had a tiny bit of extra power, but that might have been wishful thinking.

How often the filter got dirty, and whenever I did any dirt road driving, absolutely full of dust was annoying. For the cost of the cleaning kit, and how long it took for the filter to dry after made it more expensive then replacing paper filters, and way more work. Someone in a less dusty area may find it not so bad.

That's my 2 cents.
