Oil and Fuel Filter Changes?

Recommended Posts

I have a 2006 2500 Duramax and I would like to give it an oil change. I thought I change the fuel filter while I was at it. This is my first diesel and I wanted to know how difficult this will be? I've changed oil and filters tons of times on my gas engine vehicles, but am a definitely NOT a mechanic. What are the steps for dong this routine maintenance?

Thanks guys,

Rod

Grab an ACDelco PF2232 oil filter, 10 quarts of a good 15w-40, a 17mm wrench, and a nice big oil filter wrench. The oil will come out a a very good clip so keep a deep drain pan near by. The filter will probably be on their tight, and is very large. Put the new one on and lube the gasket before doing so. I may have made that too descriptive, but really oil changes are no issue on Duramax trucks. Easier than some gas trucks.

As for the fuel filter, can't say I have changed one. Try to grab an ACDelco one (TP3012 and is a very very good filter) if you can as we have seen some issues with aftermarket at work.

It's just a normal oil change. The drain plug is a 16mm on older trucks, and a 13mm on newer ones. Fill the filter with oil as much as you can without dumping the oil when threading the filter back on.

As for the fuel filter, its not too tough. The easiest way to do it is to remove the passenger front wheel and tire, then pull the fender liner. Make sure you prime the fuel system until fuel is coming out. Pretty self explanatory otherwise.

Turn the key to "on" and quickly pump the accelerator to the floor five times to reset the oil life.

As for the fuel filter life, try turning the key to "on" and put both the accelerator and brake pedal to the floor for ten seconds, then let off. Should work on an '06...

I just changed mine yesterday for the first time. Oil change was easy except for the filter. The last person must have tightened to 50 pounds or it was dry fitted.

Changing the fuel filter was hard either. I went in through the wheel well and also took off the air intake elbow. Since it was the first time I wasn't sure what I was looking at until I was done.

I found a procedure someone had on the web on another forum with pictures. It help a lot!
