2500 fuel tank in a 1500

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know or know where I could find out the dimensions for a GMT900 2500? I would like to look into replacing the 24 gallon fuel tank in my 2009 1500 with the 36 gallon in the 2500. I have no idea if it is possible but I figured getting the dimensions would be the first step.

I think this project has the possibility to have a lot of questions that need to be answered such as using a different sending unit, pump, brackets, etc. so any thoughts would be appreciated. I would be open to some aftermarket solution as well if I cold mount it under the truck and not in the bed. Basically I am a road warrior for work and can outlast the 460 mile range of my truck on the highway.

Thanks in advance.

No gas stations where you live?

HUH..........he asked about a 2500 fuel TANK, LOL not fuel.

He's talking about extending his range. I was wondering why he needs to go through all that modification. I guess a simple question on here is confusing sometimes?

No info for you on the dimensions but I like the idea. Even though I don't drive long distances I hate having to stop at the gas station. I like that they are putting the 36 in both the short bed and long bed trucks now.

Does it matter? All he is asking is if it is possible. There could be a dozen reasons

Ok back on topic

On one of the truck shows (forget which one) the replaced the stock 26 gallon tank with an aftermarket, forget what brand but it seemed pretty straight forward and was possible (unless you have a crew cab short 5'8" bed)

Well excuse me for being curious. But you guys do some strange things on here sometimes. Seems like a lot of mods sometimes without some real explanations.Just trying to learn something from you extreme truckers. ;-)

I thought I explained it pretty clearly. I drive a lot for work and I can outlast the 460 mile range of my truck. Seems pretty simple, I don't want to waste time stopping while trying to get home to my family every week. Alternatively, fuel is aften drastically different in price when crossing several states and it makes sense to fill up where it is cheap.

@Ryan - Thanks, I was afraid of that. i do have a crew cab with the short box and I figured that would be a limiting factor.

Well if you do find a way, let me know. I've been curious as to the feasibility. I've driven across both Canada & the US in this truck but that was in summer. If I were to do it in winter I would be much more comfortable to have the availability of extra fuel on hand without hauling gas cans.

I didn't know what you meant by outlast your truck. Whatever. Good luck!

Titan tanks has larger capacity tanks, but prices are around $1000. I like the idea of trying to use one out of the 2500. You could check the junk yards in your area and see if there is one from totalled out truck. If the price is right for a used one it may be worth just going ahead and picking it up. If it didnt work out you could probably resell it. Keep us posted. I'd be really curious if this 36 gallon from the GMT900 platform would fit at all in the GMT800s?
