Buying trucks with high mileage?

Recommended Posts

My buddy is selling his 2005 Chevy Colorado Crew Cab Z71 for around $6,500-$7,000, it has 140,000 miles on it though. He's taken good care of it, all the regular maintenance. From what I've read, it all depends on how well it was taken care of and how it was used. Would this be a bad purchase? Do Colorado's have any long term problems? I'm kind of skeptical to purchase a vehicle with this many miles. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I owned a GMC Canyon (2009),I hated this truck, you sat on the floor pretty much, mine started burning oil at 60,000km,emergency brakes are crap, always sticking and freezing, body panels are extremly thin, wheels stick out past the fenders so truck will always be dirty and will wear the paint off the wheel well lips, they are extremly under powered, the rear springs are weak,I never hauled anything on mine and the springs were bent and made the back sit lower than the front.the ones built before 2007 had a lot of issues with the automatic transmissions, should I go on,these are extremly cheaply built trucks and even if this one was immaculate I would steer away from it.I'm not a Ford man but the Ranger is a far superior truck to the Canyon/Colerado and you can usually pick one up much cheeper too.Just my two cents worth,I would never buy another one.

I have to agree with this. I've heard nothing but bad things about these trucks. If you're really intersted in getting a smaller truck the toyota tacoma is always a good choice. It's deffinately going to cost you more money but you get what you pay for. Those trucks will take a beating and keep on ticking.....

Good used trucks are hard to come by.

Was this truck purchased new by your friend? Any accidents? Does seller have all maintenance records? Anything broken on truck?

I'd check KBB and Edmunds and see what they state for price.

i have a buddy that had a 4 banger colly, at 10k it needed a new throttle body...and it had warm starting issues(would have to rag it to start it like it was out of fuel)

overall it was a nice truck but it was no s-10

wow.... this forum doesn't get much use.... reading a page or two back for something different and replied without seeing how old this was LOL

The guys/gals with the big trucks seem to dominate.

I'm on my 2nd Colorado. 4 banger. 4 X 4. LT.

Drives good for me. No real issues.

I've had my Colorado for a while and love it. GM sold the crap out of them, and despite having some issues (all vehicles do) they are good, solid trucks. I've never heard of transmission problems, but there were some random head issues with a few 2005 - 2006 models . . . valve seats were soft. But very few trucks had the problem, and GM extended the warranty on the head for this reason.

I don't get the venom against these trucks listed here. Had a buddy that bought a new S-10 years ago and had nothing but trouble with it, and swore off S-10's forever, but I know several people that love their S-10's. Same can be said for the full size GM trucks (and Ford, and Chrysler). Every car line has its quirks and its lemons. Sorry some have had issues with the 355's, but most people have not.
