motoGPatrick
Finding this on your $30k and up vehicle would make many sick.
redjewel2ss
i just changed my oil a couple days ago. i'm using Mobil1 5w30 oil and their M1-113 filter.
Spurshot
Yeah, I'm a M1 oil and often Mobil filter user too. Sometimes I use the K&N oil filter or the STP. I think all three are made by Wix. My 99 went 225,000 miles on M1 with oil changes around 5K, way more often than necessary (I know) and it's still going with my friend that bought it. This 08 truck gets it changed around the OLM light which is about 9K.

The STP and any of the AC delco with the suffix "E" are called an E-core filter. They use a plastic filter cage instead of a metal one to supposively use less metal and be more environmentally friendly. Many people do not like the E-core filters and detest them as being weak and inferior to a quality metal filter. I am one of those people and do not buy Champion laboratories filters just for that reason. Purolator and Wix (and their clones) are an excellent way to go at a good price. My truck currently has a Purolator Pure-1 oil filter on it now and I have been happy with everything.

As much as I cringe at the thought of using a Fram Orange Can of Death, when I look at the new STP ecores I have a similar reaction. They also have the infamous paper end caps and the lovely nylon center tube. Paper and plastic? Maybe at the grocery store, but no thanks, not on my truck. As much as I hate to admit it, I'd probably use the orange Fram over STP In fact I know I'd use the Fram Xtended guard filter. Despite the Fram name it is really put together well. Metal end caps, special filter media, screen wire backing of media, metal center tube. Good filter, and what Fram used to be years ago.
amc31b
I still dont like the small center tube holes and oil inlet holes fram uses. All of their filters have a thin, flexy, shell that turns me off too. The worse part about fram oil filters is that for being so poorly made, they aren't even cheap! The fram xtended guard, which is there "best" filter is like $13, for that price you can get a bosch distance plus, mobil-1, Napa platinum, maybe even a K&N, all of which will completely blow the fram out of the water in terms of features, construction, beta ratio, ect. Even the cheap little orange can of death is like $4. You can get a napa silver or purolator classic for that price and they blow fram out of the water too. Don't kid yourself, just stay away from Fram and STP filters. There are much better choices for the same price.
bkesting
If anyone is having "trouble" getting at the filter, you are probably using an old school filter wrench, that's the problem. You need to get yourself one of these : .........very easy to change the filter with the proper tools. Maybe it's just me, but I have a wrench like that and I have a heck of a hard time getting it onto the filter on my '09 Sierra. The filter itself is easy to get to and is in a great location, but to me it sits too deep into its housing and is hard to get a wrench on to. I usually end up gripping and cussing for about 20 min turning it ever so slowly until the seal breaks free and I can unscrew the rest of it easily. I could see how it might be a little tight without one. Otherwise I'm lost... Seems really easy with the filter wrench and extension.
bkesting
I'm just not getting the wrench onto the filter. Maybe I'm just not taking enough time to get it on there squarely, but it seems awfully tight in there for space to get that on. The one I have is an off-brand.......is the one pictured above an AC-DELCO or GM part?
MikeNH
I use one I bought off one of the tool trucks when I was at the dealership but it was a generic thing, looks the same as the one pictured. It is snug but it fits fine. I too use like a 3" extension though.
tesnoboy
Why are you guys so down on Fram filters? I haven't seen any reports of them exploding off of vehicles?!
Quint
Why are you guys so down on Fram filters? I haven't seen any reports of them exploding off of vehicles?! They don't explode, they internally disintegrate and send bits of filter media all through the engine.

All you need is a ratchet, extension and that's it. The filter wrench in the picture is a perfect fit for the AC Delco filter.......What brand filter are you using? AntelopeLTZ
The end cap wrench I have I bought at Auto Zone. It is actually a two size wrench. The size for our filter is the one closest to the square hole. When I put the extension in the hole, it actually hits the bottom of the filter before the flutes can grab onto the filter. I welded an old socket on the end so the extension can't bottom out anymore. I also took a rounded punch and tapped on the flutes to make the diameter smaller to grip the filter tighter.
