Strange Things Winter Makes Your Truck Do

with winter around the corner here in good old wisconsin the cold weather qworks of my silvy are showing again :thumbs: i figured i'd start a thread or a support group

 

1)guage cluster clicks alot more when cold

 

2) plastic interior is alot more talkative

 

3) shocks ride a bit stiffer

 

4) my exhaust sounds like a cummins inside the cab :lol:

When I lived in Montana, when it was really cold (Like -30), the instrument panel would occasionally turn off, then back on. All gauges would turn off, the lights would go off. It was pretty alarming the first few times that happened, while I was in the middle of absolutely no where, unsure if I was going to be stranded in the frigid winter, on a road where no one would likely pass by for hours. That sucked. Also, my radio would turn itself on overnight when it got cold like that. I'd come out in the morning to go to work, and the radio would be on. About half the time, the battery would be dead too from playing the radio all night. Both of those things only happened in extreme cold temps.

Not sure about my new truck since I have not seen a winter yet, but with all my cars and old truck the radio display would be very slow until warm. If I change the channel it would show both number and eventually the original number would fade away.

I get these... plus cause the heats on my CD player will overheat about 6-8 tracks into a cd..

When it's REALLY cold...like -40 or colder my truck leaks tranny fluid from the cooler lines where they are crimped from rubber to hard line. Just a couple drips usually nothing major, I've replaced them does the same thing. It's just too damn cold, power steering pump does a weird noise in this one too sometimes. It was -32C the other day it made a funky noise. My first winter with this truck I drove from fort McMurray down to drayton valley Alberta few years ago, it was -45C. Goin to visit a buddy, the PCV valve froze popped the dipstick and spewed oil EVERYWHERE like 4-5 times. In case you don't know that highway is pretty much nothing for 300kms...lucky I carry a few quarts of oil in my tool box. It woulda been a cold ass morning lol

We got -17F last week in southcentral Alaska and my interior air temp sensor started buzzing, seat back heater quit working, two door speakers cut out and the tranny stopped shifting past 2nd gear. Not bad! $43000 truck with 9k on her, and we haven't even gotten to the cold season.... Jan and feb should be interesting...

But, for comparison my 07 crapped out 4x4 switch, tcase actuator and steering rack in the cold.

My friends in Fairbanks had the Caddy engineers camped out at the dealer for a week or so testing vehicles in cold temps. Cold like when the highs are 30-40 below zero.

I don't know that the cold makes the 06 do much, low here so far is 20F, although my wiring to the fan resistor decided to crap out. The 90 takes a couple more times over to start, but still heats up like a dream, thank goodness!
