a few pics from photography class

I conned a classmate to scan a few of my slides in the final weeks of photography class and I thought I'd share a few of the pictures with you guys.

This one I took on September 11th in Downtown Milwaukee, I thought it was a pretty dramatic shot w/ the flags waving on the bridge:

Okay, i lied, here's a truck, too bad it's just a R.C.

This is my girlfriend's son outside her house:

Yours truly playing a lil' baseball, gotta love that self-timer:

A few lighthouses on Lake Michigan:

Reflection on my car:

A long exposure (about 15 seconds) of cars driving by just after sunset:

Downtown Milwaukee, that's the new art museum on the right and the US Bank building on the left (40 stories, tallest building in the state, which is nothing compared to most states):

And me again in the studio at school:

I hope you guys enjoyed the pics, just thought I'd share them with you.  My personal favorite is the picture I took downtown of the flags on the bridge.  That was the main one I wanted scanned, but I figured might as well get a few more done right away.

These were all taken w/ a cannon rebel 35mm camera on Kodak Ekatachrome 200 speed slide film.  The scans were all done between 500 dpi and 2,000 dpi on some of them so I had 20 pics scanned and they took up three cd's worth of space :jester: I was personally amazed at the quality.  I'm almost thinking about getting a slide scanner and doing more shots that way until I can afford a really really good digital camera.  The image quality is incredible, I wish I could show you one of the 50 meg original files to show you.

This is my first photography class that I have taken, but I've always enjoyed taking pictures.  This way I get to learn how a camera works and some better techniques.  By the end of the class I have been able to manipulate the photo when I take the picture instead of relying on photoshop like I do when I take most digital shots.

Anyways, let me know what you think, any constructive criticism?

Nice,

You oughta play a little with your aperture and check out the cool things you can do there.

you can see in a few of the pics where I greatly reduced the depth of field by messing w/ the aperature.  I've got about 100 pics that I took where I was modifying the aperature, but they weren't quite interesting enough.

Interesting!

In Idaho, our tallest building is also a US Bank building.  Here's a link to a picture of it (too lazy to U/L a pic to my webspace):

EDIT: It says "former Idaho's tallest" but the "soon to be" Idaho's tallest has recently lost funding and apparently won't be built.

Those look really good.  I like the reflection in the car.

I've never seen pictures from a digital from anybody that were as good as some of the ones I've seen taken with any model of a Cannon Rebel.  Good luck with the pictures.  My advice, get the slide scanner and keep working with the camera you have, you do a great job with it.

Yeah, the Cannon is one of the better low cost 35mm cameras around.  I've had mine for almost three years now and it's worked perfectly.

I'm contemplating getting a slide scanner and shooting slide film, but then again, you can't beat the turn around time of digital.  It's pretty convenient having the pics immediately for use.

I think if I got a slide scanner I'd be set.  I can't go back to film after doing digital, but unless you shell out major $$$ for a really good digital camera you can't do quite what you can w/ a film camera.

Nice pics!

Digital cameras have come along way. I used to shoot Motorsports with EOS's but now I'm strictly digital and most people can't see the difference. The only time you probably would see a difference is if you were to go to 8x10 or larger print.

Dude,

I love photography to. I have two Minolta 35mm cameras that I havent used in over 5 years. I'm totaly digital now.

My first digital was a Sony MVC 85 It uses a floppy for storage media and works great when you are in a place where you want to copy the pics fast and hand off a dist to someone else . I use a Minolta Dimage S304 for most all of my photography now. It takes great resolution pics. 3.4 resolution. When printed on glossy photo paper with my HP 5550 printer the resullts are as good as a 35 mm print. I just love to play with my pictures by cropping and such. Digital is the way to go.
